Thanks everyone for some fine suggestions! Definitely going to keep looking at the Etaps, but and widening the search now too!

I'm a little out of touch with 'covid-era' prices but Hunter Horizon 26 usually creeps in to that price range..
As a slightly left-field choice, what about one of my personal favourites, an MG Spring 25?
I really like the MG Spring, but they appear to be like Hen’s teeth!

Wouldn't that have the same issues as the Tonic re. Headlining I think they are just variations on theme. Not sure they are not out of the same molds.
The First 235 is a totally different boat to the Jeanneau Tonic. Designed by Finot and based on a early mini transat design. There is in indeed headlining, but not everywhere. Just under the decks and either side of the companionway. Overhead is a fibreglass liner. The boat otherwise fits the brief very well - particularly from the sailing point of view. It has a long waterline for it’s length and plenty of sail area so it’s very quick.

Last year I bought a 24ft American Boat. A Hunter Legend 240. It was built in 1997 and is in very good condition. And they are cheap. It came on an American Trailer . I only looked at it because it was near me and came with a mooring on a Lake not far away. So I had to go and see it. I was impressed with its condition, No osmosis. (in 1982 I bought a 9 year old Nauticat 33 which had osmosis ) Even the 23 year old Tohatsu ran perfectly. I thought the American Trailer would be rubbish, Its very good, the Importer obviously had it modified to be towed on UK roads as it has a UK axle with UK hubs and brake shoes.
I have had Indenspention Trailers and various new Farm Trailers and this US trailer is a real bit of kit, Big section steel and no rust.
We were able to plonk it in the water and go sailing. Lifting Keel. An Owners Association which is only £20 a year.
In my opinion these boats are under rated.

If an Etap then a model with a lift keel of the type that involves up to 100 winds at the mast to lift would make things very difficult for a mud berth -obviously not so for a wet marina berth.

The First 235 does look a proper little yacht, and would be a lot of fun. I also like the look of the Sun Odyssey 24.2, does anyone have any thoughts on those?
