Small Hoovers

Blimey, all this ironing of Ensigns is a bit scary. There's obviously a lot to be learned yet! They never mentioned any of this on me Competent Crew!

Exactly right and I wish we had specified grey to match our canvas work. We always used to have blue on our old boat to match the blue covers but it faded, so we figured white was better when we ordered a sail for our current boat. However the white is now grey from atmospheric pollution and despite annual valeting, unfortunately is not the same 'grey' as our covers, just dirty!

Have you thought about a sock? You could have a single colour sock that you hoist over the foresail when it's furled. I'm getting lemon yellow or shocking pink vibes - with bits of lace. By the way, with all this hoovering and ironing do you guys have net curtains as well?

I had better come clean and admit to having an iron on the boat as well as the Hoover /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif. Never used it on the ensign though.

Me too John! We used to carry a really old fashioned one that you heated up on the stove, nowadays we have a folding travel iron that runs on 110/220v.

As for net curtains, we do have nets to fit all the opening hatches do those count? They are insect stoppers and came with the boat which had spent some years in the Med.

OK OK, I admit to:- two hoovers, (one wet/dry for sanding mainly) one iron, one ironing board, one washing machine, two hoses, one salt, one fresh, two washing lines, curtains (not lace) in my cabins, OK I'm a wimp!! I admit it! but, Never, never ironed an ensign! [--word removed--] a man can only go so far!!

Not keen on socks over the rolled genoa, it is one more job to do and unless it went straight on after arrival wouldn't protect the sail whilst we were on board unless there was a UV strip as well. We do put the mainsail cover on immediately I know but a genoa one as well would double the trouble. They are also noisy and lots of windage, there a couple in our marina vibrating away. Fluorescent pink though, that IS a thought...

We used to have a washing machine but not I suspect like yours. Ours was like a hand driven concrete mixer, plastic drum and cost about£30. SWMBO dropped the special lid overboard and we never bothered to replace it, but it did work quite well. What WOULD be useful though would be a modern mangle to save all the wringing dry! We do have a (small) rotary washing line for the 'smalls' and another long one that goes all round the boat....

PS Don't tell anyone but I never ironed an ensign either. I got SWMBO to do it! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

OK - I think it's time to fess up to all the really embarrassing gadgets and items you all have on board that are not really what you would expect on your regular lean, mean sailing machine. Just to recount a story we had anchored off a small, rustic, out of the way beach bar in Abacos, Bahamas a couple of years ago and we (wife and daughter No 2)showered and changed for the evening. Jumped in the dingy and went ashore. Bar had a party of Yanks who appeared to have spent most of the afternoon there. I had on a clean, cotton shirt that was quite unwrinkled - who receives massive abuse along the lines of "hey guys this limey's wearing a pressed shirt". Ever since then I've thought that an iron would be a bit embarrassing. On the other hand if the Commodore of the local yacht club invites you to dinner, no doubt SWMBO would like to turn up without wrinkles in her clothes.

Anyways back to the question in hand. Who's got a clothes brush on board? Who has napkin rings? Who has a dishwasher (of the machine variety!) Oh, and the ultimate, a tumble dryer?

And I am obviously not quite there in the real sailor stakes yet as I have to confess have had a clothes brush on board from time to time - but none of the others.

I have put drinkie and foodie vending machines on others' boats, maybe that puts me in some special crass class allowing me to wear a gold trimmed cap.
