Iam going to fit a hap on my With Vitress and leave on mooring in freshwater. The plastic cleats will be on second top plank. They will hold the shock cord in the time honoured V shape.from eylet to cleat.I normally use two small stainless nuts and bolts per cleat but the Bonwitco is double skinned. Self tappers with a pilot hole and Sikaflex...maybe Gelcoat? Scared to pop rivet as Glass is not thick on topsides. What do gurus think?.......probably sex drugs and rock`n roll like the rest of us. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I am not familiar with the term "hap" or a "With Vitress" or even a Bonwitco, however it sounds to me like you are going to fit 2 plastic horn cleats to the outside of the hull a little below the gunwhale.

I am not sure that is a good place for mooring cleats as they may be susceptible to damage when coming into a pier or jetty.

I am not sure that bungee cord will be man enough for the job of holding the boat.

My boat is a trailer sailer and as such has a fitting mounted half way down the bow for attaching a trailer winch. It was a U bolt of 3/8inch metal turned down to 5/16 inch where the nuts go on. I used this as the first load point when moored for many years. But the fitting failed in fatigue. It was the sideways loads as the boat sailed around in a strong wind that broke the fitting. I have replaced it with a saddle a 2 normal 3/8 bolts. Fortunately they go ionto an anchor well through a great thickness of fibreglass at the bow. Even then they have worked loose recently and been tightened.

There is an advantage in mooring from a low point. It gets the mooring rope clear of any point of chafe and also clear of any other boats that come adrift. You need a secondary mooring attachment ie the deck cleat which is always used for casting off and on return. I attach the primary load path down the bow from the dinghy before leaving the boat.

So if you wan to use a pair of cleats make sure they are through bolted and have secondary load path to a deck cleat. Get very heavy bungee. good luck olewill

I`m not explaining properly. Hap is a cover to stop water. Cleats are to hold cover. Bungee rope goes through eylets on hap and clips into a cleat. There will be a cleat every 250mm on each side. Laid out flat hap will be like a long leaf. It is basicaly to know the options for fixing something to thin Grp.

You can get mushroom shaped bungee cleats, single screw fixing, often used on trailers to secure covers. Button cleats they may be called. A self tapper and silicone sealant will probably be ok to mount them, but when the inevitably get ripped out, by coming alongside or whatever, you need to ensure water does not get between the skins of your boat.
Is it a sandwich or a separate inner moulding.
Never heard it called a hap before!
Cheers,

Common term this side of the border! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Can be used (like here) as a noun, also as a verb "tae hap", or "tae hap up". The adjective is "happit", which describes a thing or person to which a hap has been applied. If a good and generous job has been made of said "happin" the normal description would then be "weel happit".

You might try 'peel rivets' which are like normal blind rivets except that the bit behind the surface you are fastening to peels back like a banana skin if you see what I mean, the intention is to spread the load on thinner materials.

Hi Lexi sorry about that. I blame it on the language barrier.

[/ QUOTE ]Please do comment Will, then he can get uppity about being Scottish and not English... If its any consolation, I read the original post and hadn't got a clue what he was talking about either.
