Small Boat Radar

I've moved my Raymarine C70 Chartplotter onto my Anderson 22, and having scared myself in early morning fog around the Raysand, want to add radar. My 24" Raydome is far to big for the Anderson, and think even if I bought the 18" Raydome it would be too big. I know of another Anderson which has the JRC 1000 with a 12" dome, and am thinking of buying that as a stand alone, but are there any better options?

The JRC1000 is discontinued (although there are a few around still at about £675). A better product is the Furuno 1623, which has a 15" radome, and is available for around £730.

Try and get a good look at whatever you are looking at onboard to check it really will work. I tried an unstabilised JRC 1000 in the Solent and the picture danced around so much it was impossible to be sure you where following the same target let alone take bearings. Nothing wrong with JRC (I now have one of the 10"CRT models) it seems a problem with all small unstabilised radars and the smaller the boat the bigger the problem. It would seem a but daft to spend £800 on a buget radar but then then another £5-600 for a fast heading sensor to get a decent pic always assuming it has heading imput. Appreciate the problem of a large dome on a small mast but have you though about mounting an 18/24" unit on a pole on the stern.

Thanks for the thoughts; the dilemna is that if I go to a 15", might as well go for the 18" and get colour/chart overlay etc as I already have the C70 plotter. Perhaps on a pole at the stern could be an option, but it is a small boat and it seems to go against the nature of such a boat (I'd be tempted to have an arch and put a wind generator on it as well). The 12" would be small enough for the mast, but as noted above, some dealers say they have only a last few left, and I haven't seen it at £675, quite a bit more (plus I expect £100 for fixing bracket). Decisions, decisions!

I have had a JRC 1000 on my Hunter 26 for a few years. It dose what it says on the tin.
The main advantage is that the dome is not out of place up the mast.
