Just done that ... I was going to be more pro-active and call / help owner if I could give/get details.

Brilliant response from QHM Portsmouth / Police

Update to boat dragging post:

QHM took details. Zoomed their camera (a mile?) up the harbour. Spotted the boat. Sent Police launch. They called me. Discussed options. Boat was now in about one foot of water ... so not many. Said they would try to keep an eye on it through night as expensive outboard hanging off transom. Also said they'd call the local yachtclub who 'own' ? some of the moorings. One hour later the owner turns up. Job done /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Hmmm, in my experience owners do not always work out who helped them. Won't stop me helping tho', it may be my boat one day. If it ever is, I hope I have the persistence to find out who helped.

Here on the Swan river this seems to be a very common occurrence. With several thousand boats on swing moorings some are neglected and so escape. It is interesting to examine the remains of the mooring to see where the failure was. Often there is a buoy and a bit of chain hanging down where the shackle or chain have worn through.

Alarmingly the last one I rescued a few weeks back had no mooring attached. Either the rope to the deck cleat wore through or possibly someone mischievously let it go. That was a lovely 22 sailer.
Fortunately I have access to the club rescue boat which is set up and gutsy enough to haul a sail boat off the mud. Unfortunately I live so close we notice run a way boats.

We have both water Police and Department of Planning and Infrastructure authorities both of whom have access to the boat register. Boats must be registered here. So they can fairly easily contact the owners. Both these authorities have patrol boats capable of rescueing a boat. Indeed they even have spare swing moorings for run away boats. I guess this is all the advantage of concentrated boating. The disadvantage is collisions are common. olewill
