"Smacks boats"

I perhaps should post this on the OGA forum, but does anybody know who moulds/makes the smacks boats that a lot of the East Coast Old Gaffers use? There's several in the smack dock at Brightlingsea, many of the gaffers on the EC cruise had them when on the buoys at Pin Mill last August.

Here are a couple sailing in a decent breeze at the East Coast Old Gaffers "Swallows and Amazons" a couple of years back. Super boats and I heard you could but the hull moulding but couldn't find our where so if you get to the bottom of it...

Thanks for those, I was trying to do bigger & didn't mean to do the thumbnails. Great photo's! I can't remember my log in for the OGA forum but will try & find out and report back

Brian Kennel will supply the Smacks Boats complete or as a bare moulding. There are more than one mould around the Essex area.

Old thread, but I went to speak to Brian Kennell who works at the Pioneer Trust, Harkers Yard, which is on the road from the Brightlingsea Harbourmasters office, to Morgans Yard, and the Trusts building is just beyond Morgans Yard. He says he built about 50 after taking over the 12' mould from Alf Last. (hoping the names/spelling is not too far out) He hasn't built one for about two years, but is considering doing one (or two if I can get the money & permission from wife!). He would rather do a complete boat as against selling a bare GRP shell. A very nice and interesting person to talk to, and how I wish I had my camera with me when I went to see him! So if anybody else is interested I think now would be the time to make contact.

On a related subject i recently acquired the mould for the 18ft rowing Skiff that used to be used on Hanningfield reservoir, there are quite a few of these at Heybridge & at Leigh & Benfleet, four came in the top 48 of the Great River race last weekend, i can do hulls or finished boats.

Boy's smack from Essex or a proper 80 odd foot East Coast smack, built out of 100 tons of oak? Plenty of scope around and not dissimilar to a Class C ship's lifeboat (still occasionally available in in real treewood). Keep digging and you'll find a proper one. OF
