I can see that it would not slip

but am amazed that it will not tighten

must have a play and put some strain on it

According to Grog it does not slip or bind. He says because the method of tying is not obvious it was one of the knots responsible for him compiling the animations.

Can be used as an emergency bosuns chair ... one leg in each loop!

Known how to tie it for a long time... never used it though.

I believe the trad term is a Cast Clovehitch - particularly useful if you are easing a line around a bollard, once adjusted you simply cast a second turn over the bollard.
