Have any of you ever sailed to Sligo bay and Rosses point or Sligo harbour? Would be interested in your experiences in that corner of Ireland.

Sligo ok if you go in on a rising tide. Pontoon just below the bridge in the town. Close to bus station.
Teelin has visitor mooring buoys, Killybegs is a big fish harbour, but they are very helpful.
Little island in the middle of Donegal bay has very old church but it was too rough for me to land.
Great area if you get the weather and you have the time.

Thanks for that.
How was the channel depth on the way up from Rosses point etc. How was the weather when u visited there, did u approach Sligo bay from north or south, did u visit Innishmuray island?
Do u have a plotter track of ur course into the bay and up to Sligo?
I grew up in Sligo and near the coast beside The penensula of Roughley which would be to port in u entered the bay from the north. There wase'nt a marina when i lived there. When i was about 12 i was aboard a clinker boat which a family friend was taking from Sligo to Rosses point, the coil packed up (petrol inboard) and we were stranded for hours until someone came out in a smaller boat and took us in tow to Coney island, what an adventure for a lad of my age.
I worked in a hotel in Rosses point and the hotel over the river up from Sligo harbour, then known as the Silver swan. Used hand about the derilict fishing and cargo boats in the harbour when playing truant from school. Learned my rowing skills on Glencar lake as lived beside it in my teen years.
Lovely place.

I sailed from Killala. The weather was mixed, as it quite often is in this area. I missed the tide and had a slog up river against the ebb, not pretty but not the end of the world.
The ICC guide is invaluable for any visits to the west coast of Ireland, they make it simple to enter any of the harbours.
Against advice I left on a calm morning to sail to Teelin and got quite badly frightened by the weather in Donegal bay. Did not get the chance to see, let alone land, on inishmurry.
No GPS track I am afraid, but it is all well buoyed. I was told not to cut the corners in the bay as there are extensive sand banks.

Ps.
Look up "Inmyfootsteps" or maybe it's "inyourfootsteps" covers all of Ireland.
Thake lots of time and enjoy.

We have anchored at Rosses Point several times. Strongish tidal stream. Need to take care of moorings nearby, for when tide turns and you lie in the opposite direction.
Have been up to Sligo also. Ran aground once near where the ships turn, but able to motor through into deeper water again. The route up from memory was well buoyed.

No help to you, Wanderer, but I can't think of Sligo without smiling at the name of a firm of solicitors that once had offices opposite Sligo Courthhouse: Argue and Phibbs.
At one time they were reported to be considering a third partner, name of Cheetam. Even better than Sue, Grabbit and Runne?

Reminds me of a birthday card I sent recently to one of my motorbike racing mates.

It showed a reception desk at a solicitors office, receptionist typing, solicitor on her side speaking to a punter on the customer side. Behind was a sign that read " Bastard, Hayes, Bastard and Bastard.

The punter was saying " Nothing personal Mr Hayes, but I really would like to engage one of the other partners! "

Made I laugh...............................

Going to Ireland next season, probably via the Scillies. Might get round as far as Limerick. We want to be in the IOM for the Classic TT and MGP so we are hoping for reasonable weather early on.

I knew a motorcycle dealer and sometime racer from Sligo years ago-Ritchie Cunningham. I wonder if he is still around?

Rotax,
if you are going to Limerick make sure you get the tides right or you will spend hours fighting the ebb and going nowhere.
The Foynes Yacht Club makes a handy and very friendly stop between tides.

There used be a butcher in the town who carved in wood as a hobby, his creations eventually led him to make a career out of it and he turned the butchers into an outlet for his carvings, became a successful buiness.

I knew Ritchie, he was in partnership with a guy called Tony whi got killed in a van accident on the way to mondello many years ago. Aparently it was a head on and his motorcycle meved forward in van breaking his neck. I was at his funeral. Ive heard it said he once killed a donkey after his z900 colided with the cart causing the cart shaft to split and spear through the donkey.
Ive not seen Ritchie for about 40yrs.
Small world!

Just as a matter of interest, where are you sailing from to get to Sligo? There is a lot to see on the way to there from anywhere.

The clue is in my user name!
Sailing from the Clyde. Sailing to Sligo is a passage i plan to do sometime but not nxt season.
I would think i would do Clyde to Ballycastle then the Foyle and port hop to Sligo stopping in Killybeggs.
Cw

I haven't done Ballycastle but Portrush was very friendly.
I cant recommend Greencastle on the Foyle, as I had a very rough night on the pontoons with the tide rushing past.
You would have to stop at Tory Island to buy the King of Tory a pint.
Enjoy.

PS. top up with fuel and water at every opportunity, they are few and far between.
