Sliding Genoa Car Cleats

sliding cleats

I have the metal version of these on my Jaguar 25 for attaching springs. I have to admit the fit is a little loose, and they can only be as strong as the track to which they're attached. However as springs attachments they shouldn't get too much load so I'm quite happy with them.

I belive Antal do metal ones (those on your link are plastic).

Think I would be happy with a load running "along the length" of the cleat, but probably not across. Would have to see one.

But in principal I think they are a great idea, just watch out for sheets getting wrapped around them if you leave them on when saling. Maybe some chocks would be required.

No problems. Been using them for years. As already noted pulls on springs are along so load is spread over whole length of track fastenings.

Or to put it another way - the Genoa tracks are designed to take the load generated in the Genoa sheets - if your springs are under that sort of load then you are doing something very wrong somewhere :)

I have the metal barton one (32mm T Track). We have been using it for about 3 years without problems. works very well, we only have one as it so easy to move it to the other side and it gets removed when sailing

I have the same, but fitted both sides, saves the hassle of moving :D

I just slide them to the very rear of the tarck when sailing, don't caise any interference there.

Work very well, and you can adjust the position to suit particular mooring siruations.

Only snag was that the Barton fittings are a very close fit on Lewmar 32mm track, dimensions slightly different. I had to grind a few screw heads to make sure they were truly flush where they had been fitted not quite true.

Hi,

Anyone used these or a similar product?

http://www.jimmygreen.co.uk/chandle.../product_info/barton_sliding_nylon_cleats.htm

Was thinking of fitting them to my Sadler 25 for springs. Are they strong enough? Will the Track take the load? Any comments appreciated

I've been using Barton's s/s version of this cleat for a couple of seasons on my Sadler 26 and it has proven to be very useful for the purpose you state.

However, do be careful as I forgot to remove mine last time out and I wondered why my genoa sheet kept snagging on one tack ( track partially concealed by a folded- down sprayhood) and after several tacks hard on the wind, there was a sudden ping and I discovered I'd used enough force to actually distort the cleat frame/sliding adjuster and I very much doubt it can be straightened- a very expensive mistake!!

Clamp-on experience?

Seems to me that the OP and those who have commented so far are referring to sliding cleats. But I believe Barton also makes a clamp-on cleat for T-tracks, 25 and 32mm (which could be fitted without removing the track end stop).
It would be interesting to get some opinions from people with experience of these.

I also tried one of these first, as I thought I could get away with only one to switch sides easily.

It does not fit on Lewmar 32mm track, presumably it does on original Barton 32mm.

As I said in my previous post the track profiles are slightly different altho' both are 32mm wide.

Mine has a sliding clamp which means it fits over the genoa track, then the clamp is tightened up to hold it in place which supplements the the post in the underside of the thumb screw which locates in a vacant genoa car hole for its prime security

Hi Gin

Was yours a 'Barton clamp' or another make , sounds better if you can fix it in the genoa track hole
Regards
Mike

It was the Clamp-On Cleat shown here : -http://www.bartonmarine.com/html/special_cleats.htm

it cost about £50 two seasons ago- a whopping price but a useful bit of kit (if not abused)
