The final (8th) cut on the wreck was completed back in October, but they then ran into weather problems. Latest from the official site <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tricolorsalvage.com/pages/latestnews.asp>Tricolor</A> was Nov 03.

The pictures show the first and second sections being recovered. The first cut was the most difficult as they had to saw through the prop shaft. One of the pictures shows the 'hacksaw' which was a diamond-impregnated cutting hawser. Fascinating pictures.

Great site, the photos of the ER would make a good quiz for ER cadets in id'ing the kit. Did I spot an auxilary boiler in amongst the kit and the effectiveness of the cutter in slicing through the engine flywheels is amazing.
Have need for a few mW of diesels coming up in the next few months possibly 2nd hand so guess I will avoid any one of these that could appear on market from the more 'remote' hand market internet sites.

The diamond cutting wire was developed by Smit for the KURSK; nuclear submarine hulls have a lot more steel in them than car carriers do!

Yes I have seen a very good programme about that as well. Its certainly effective, the clean cut is remarkable, on No1 geny its sliced between flywheel and alternator, No2 geny its actually sliced through the flywheel and turbo charger casing and on No 3 geny the geny crankshaft is cut through. The lack of corrosion inside the genies exhaust trunking and elsewhere surprised me, the only rust seemed to be where the slicer had gone.

Just guessing, and I don't pretend to know, maybe there was enough of an oil film on those parts to hold corrosion at bay for a few months?
