I have an SP 40 S2i bow thruster, three years old and it is seriously corroded on the propeller drive shaft. The corrosion is at the interface between the self locking nut which secures the prop, and the thread on the shaft. It is not visible until the nut is removed.

The shaft is not available as a spare. It is necessary to buy a complete gearbox. Price, I kid you not, £400 inc VAT.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Anode in place, properly secured, regularly replaced, and no problems with the bronze casing. Mind you, the corrosion is a long way from the anode!

/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I have just had one of these fitted!.... same model - will kep an eye on this on annual inspections.... is yours now not useable at all? Can you get the shaft out? If so, maybe worth getting one made? Or perhaps have the existing cleaned and recoated or something.... Just thoughts!

In any case - if you have replace the anodes properly then the corrosion is bad news /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I have a sliepner, 5 yrs old, no probs like that.

sounds like the nut may be the wrong material. Is it on both nuts or just one? Could it be that someone fitted the wrong nut?

If the shaft can be got out could you have it welded then turned then rethreaded with a die? Mind you, would cost a good part of the £400 to do all that...

Sorry to hear all this
