i have just bought a 80G hard drive & want to keep the existing 40G ( partitioned 20 /20 ) as master & run the 80 G as a slave.
problem i have is that i dont know what to/ how to set the jumpers.
all help greatly appreciated

should be a little diagram on each hard drive showing the position of the hard drive slave/master jumpers. If it came with any documentation then try there.
 
I stand ready to be corrected, but IIRC, you should have three small diagrams showing possibly 6 pins in each. the diagrams should be labelled Device 0, Device 1, and Cable SEL. Look at the configuration on your existing hard drive and see if it is set to Device 0 (may well be different pin positions to new drive) - if old one is set to Device 0, then set new one to Device 1 (this may be the setting labelled "forcing device 1")

Plug it in and pay attention as it boots up as it will display whether you have them set correctly to master/slave.

Are they two hard drives of the same speed (ATA rating) and rpm? cause if the new one is a newer/faster drive, you would be welll advised to move the operating system onto the faster drive, and use the slower one for archive

So remove the jumper that is on G/H and move it to C/D.

I suspect that your existing drive is probably set as Master, so you should just be able to link the two together on the same cable.
 
drawings are easy using serif DrawPlus. especially if you have a tablet.

They are even easier if you just copy a picture from a web site /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif BTW a quick look at the properties of the picture normally reveals whether it is from a picture type site, or copied from a manufacturer's tech space!!!
 
Top two diagrams show you the position and numbering of the posts to attach the jumpers. Theoretically you dont need the others cause I have told you which posts to use, but if you look at the one marked slave, it shows a hatched line around the appropriate pins.

BTW it is best to use a set of tweezers to reomve and replace the jumpers. They are pesky little varmints and liable to take a side trip on their own unless watched carefully!
