Slap Silencer - does it really work?

This is a continuation of an earlier post about the noise in our aft cabin caused by water slapping against the hull.

Apparently there is something called a Slap Silencer that is effective in damping the sound of water slapping against the hull when wind and wavelets are directed at the stern.

I've found the web site http://www.slapsilencer.com. But does anyone have first hand experience with the Slap Silencer? Does it really work?

Thanks.

You're not having much luck with your replies!

From the look of it it would be easy enough to make one, a piece of suitable cloth of appropriate size with pockets sewn in for battens to fit inside, tight against the hull and underwater along the forward edge, loose and out of the water at the after end to absorb the wavelets. If it fits the shape of the hull properly I can't see why it wouldn't at least help, if that helps...:)

This sort of thing...?

Why not just buy a well designed boat in the first place?

Thanks. That's really very helpful. I imagine it must be difficult to accept that yacht design has progressed quite a bit since the world was blessed with the Westerly Pentland Ketch.

Don't be too disheartened! Think the reason why you are not getting many sensible replies is that very few people use them in this country - and even in the Med where stern slap is more of a problem I have not seen many. Think they work, but they are expensive and the alternatives of using a fender or swimming aid much cheaper. Either that or most people like me learn to live with it.

BTW owners of "proper" boats like Fifes with long counters are even worse than modern boats - but of course owners always slept ashore and the crew lived in the focsle so weren't bothered!

If you Googled for "slap silencer", as I suggested in your previous thread, you should have found lots of forum posts which seem to suggest it works. However, it is expensive. But one post on the SailboatOwners.com forum gave dimensions, and the Slap Silencer website gives construction information. I reckon there's enough information to make one yourself at reasonably low cost.

I have a product called a Wave Muffler which does work in the sense it considerably reduces wave slap, but not altogether. It was made by a small company called Fairclip yachting, but unfortunately ill health of the owner has meant the business has died. I currently have a small and medium sized one, which I would like to get rid of as I'm likely to be properly boatless for some time. PM me if you are interested.
