my boat is equipped with this piece of ***** which doesnt work because the chain sticks in the gypsy, carries past the small hole and jams. the chain is as supplied by moody but the windlass is not equipped with a stripper. this is like a finger that pokes up into the central groove of the gypsy and eases the chain off it.

has anyone got a picture / can give me dimensions so I can make one up?

Mine does not need a stripper - I had the same problem as you when I took the boat on because the previous owner had not purchased calibrated chain. Never mind the source of the chain - is it calibrated for the gypsy?

The stipper is only for rope as the chain gypsy will take both if the rope is the correct size. If chain is not running smoothly it is almost certainly because it is NOT calibrated for that Gypsy

Don't get paranoid about the chain. I used both 1/4" and 3/8" on my S-L 514 electric ( ancient) windlass. The trick was to only raise slack chain, ie drift over the anchor then press the button. Once under weigh, I just needed to be careful it didn't jump out( usually due to twisting in the chain. cured by a swivel) The stripper on mine was a finger attached to the casting around the hole in the deck. A nuiscance, because I couldn't get the gypsy off without moving the whole unit.

You are most probably correct though the small hole in the base plate doesnt help either. But since I'm not sure I'm keeping the boat I'm not keen on changing the chain at this stage.
