SL 400 toilet

Evening all, not long back from a week end on boat, noticed that the SL 400 toilet once it had been pumped out was filling up with water up to the rim. Do SL do a repair kit? What is the likely problem? I have turned off the inlet valve to prevent any further problems.

Most spares are available from SL spares http://www.slspares.co.uk/ Not cheap but cheaper than a new toilet.

If closing the inlet seacock stops the problem then the valves in the inlet part of the pump require attention.

I think it would be good practice to shut the seacocks when not in use. Some toilets I would not bother about but with this one I would. Certainly when leaving the boat

Can you check whether the water is coming in from the inlet side (ie round teh rim) or the outlet (up the hole). I think it's more likely to be the latter, showing that the joker valve (number 6) has perished.

An alternative possibility is that the diaphragm has split and seawater is getting through from the inlet side. If it still pumps out, that's less likely.
The good news is that the toilets are pretty easy to work on (the joker valve is quick and easy toreplace in situ) and most spares are available, quite cheaply.

Replace the SL 400 as soon as you can. I spent years and ££££'s trying to sort one out and I came to the conclusion that they are s**t.

A Jabsco is about £100, a reasonable investment for the seat of easement.
 
i think the sl400 is much maligned. their advantage is that they fit in lots of older boats where the headroom is limited. i got on fine with mine and repaired it easily and simply. i now have a Lavac which i agree is better but i wouldn't junk and sl400 that worked simply to fit a lavac, if you can fit a jabsco easily and simply in tyhe space vailable, that might be a good alternative as the spares for the SL400 have got a bit pricier than mne were. however, working on the sl400 is a doddle. i used to find the best way to flush mine was kneeling in front facing it - which is hardly the best desgin in the world. but they work, are easy to repair and fit in a small space.

Dont forget they are obsolete and I suspect there is a limit to the number of spares available. Id guess when they are gone they are gone.

I do wish Id taken up the offer of a free one a while back though.

As far as I am aware, almost everything is being remanufactured, though of course that could stop. Certainly the pump chambers became unavailable after SL went keel-up and then reappeared. Quite apart from the low profile advantage, I miss having a full size toilet seat!
