According to today's Kathimerini newspaper (http://www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_articles_wsite1_1_12/04/2013_493370) the Ionian island of Skorpios has been sold to Russian oligarch Dmitry Rybolovlev for 100 million Euros.

The businessman, real estate investor and owner of AS Monaco soccer club, who has an estimated fortune of 10 billion euros, has reportedly secured the purchase of the tiny island, along with the rocky islet of Tsokari, after several months of paperwork involving lawyers and entrepreneurs in Nicosia, Brussels, Geneva and Luxembourg.

I wonder whether he will be more aggressive with boats anchoring close to shore there than Athina Onassis was? We know he only owns the island and not the sea around it but might is often right.....

So, Onassis never left it to the Greek state then?

At €100M, it looks like a bargain, almost a steal.

Does Skorpidi go with it I wonder?

No more Nidri tripper boats landing on the beaches then.

Great stuff this soviet communism!

Come now , Steve, though there always have been a vocal minority of hard-left - Greece has the only unmodernised Marxist Leninist party in the world.
It is really funny listening to a KKK Rally, when I first saw one, in Kalamata I couldn't believe my eyes or my ears. It's being taken back to the early 20th century.

Obviously Greece has taken to heart the suggestion in "Der Speigel" and from Wolfgang, that they should sell some of their "national Heritage", there having been an announcement that the Kuwaiti Royal Family had pulled out of the "marina symposium" and bought 5 Ionian islands (of which only Oxieia was named), for €9 billion. The billion is, I think, a reporting error (most of the chattering class are arithmetically challenged).

Except that the island was not sold by the Greek state but by the Onassis family. I think that all the Greek state will get out of this deal is a little bit of tax perhaps?

The state owns the first 10m inland from HW line (if the shoreline had not been built up before some date, which I don't know). That's the basis on which people can land on any "private" island, excepting where there are quays, harbour walls or houses.

And the next 20m (or is it 30?) belongs to the Dimos - local council. Which is why they love building roads behind the beaches. They don't have to purchase the land.

I can't see how this was a response to my post charles! I don't see what the KKK has to do with it.

However, you are wrong about the "non-naming" of the islands the Kuwaitis were interested in. As well as Oxia, they were going to have Arkhudi, Astakos, Kouneli and the Dragoneras too. All administered by The Dimos of Ithaki. Incidentally, Oxia was already owned by an Australian.

An add-on, Steve, to your comment about soviet communism. Just underlining the fact that there is a strong political left in the country - liable to anything, stupid, wise or just plain Marxist-Leninist.

I read the announcement about 2 months ago - really about the Kuwaitis pulling out of the 2nd round of the marina bidding. In that only Oxieia was mentioned, but it was a Greek paper - by the by, isn't Astakos a mainland port? I anchored there last year.

Incidentally, as I understand Greek law, you can only own the lease to an island, the 1st 10m from the shore being public and the next 30m belonging to the Diemos, or local community. No doubt someone who knows will be along to correct me.

According to my Greek dentist, Scorpios was given to Onassis on a 99 year lease. Athena Onassis has sold the remaining 40 odd years lease. So maybe the Greek people will get something more from the island eventually!

At last, some hard information from a reputable source. ;)

Seriously, I don't doubt that's correct but 40 years is a long time. I wonder whether there will still be a Greek state in 40 years? Still, perhaps the Greater German Empire that will probably be in charge by then might extend the lease for another big injection of Russian cash???

You mean of course KKE not KKK :)

BTW has anything changed since the early 20th century?
Maybe the capital has been distributed or big corporations and profit are less important today than then or a worker's child has equal opportunity with a ruling class child. Maybe work, education and health services are for all.
Maybe profit ceased to be the highest value of our "civilization".
If all or some of the above have changed I am to blame as I didn't notice.
