size for size will be perfectly ok but watch if the fitting has a chamfer in which case put corresponding chamfer on the hole. If you have too much clearance the strength of the whole assembly relies too much on the sealant and compression of the nut ....
I certainly wouldn't bother to cast it in etc. 1/16" all round is nothing and will easily be taken up by a good mastic to provide a sound joint. This is about the 'oversize' I deliberately cut the holes for my new transducers recently following doing the same thing for many years.
I'm one of those that likes to see a small bed of mastic around the fitting, not have the fitting jammed tightly.
Agree with gerryat. Just sealant should be fine. OLDSALTOZ advise also sound, though IMHO, becoming a little bit over-the-top if you are using a decent sealant.
just another q on this, our craft needs new Skins , current ones are bronze I think, and after 25 years all need replacing.
Is metal the way to go, or use plastic types ?
Ahem..... get DZR Bronze fittings. (yes, they are actually brass) .
no Tonval.
**no cheap generic fittings from local chandlery.**
Gunmetal ok.
LG2 ok.
or Marlon plastic fittings from Forespar ok.
personally, I settled on ISIS "DZR" fittings from aquafax because they were quite explicit about what is was and wasnt. go for seacocks (90degree handles) rather than gate valves (round handles).
have fun trying to make sense of all the old posts.....
theres so much confusion on this topic that it pisses me off a bit that chandleries and suppliers cant supply some decent information on the stuff that they sell. You'll be told that brass is bronze and vice versa, that there is no difference between them, and that whatever is on the shelf is fit for marine use.
But my first born son has emigrated in your direction (Sydney, Coogee Bay). He doesn't like sailing but he's definately into the Aussie way of life - drinking - partying - Barbies - Shiela's etc.
The lifestyle is a bit hard to take at times; just had our mid winter longest night and it's 26*c with clear blue skies, an 8 to 12 knot S/Easter. Life is tough in the tropics.
Thou there is some bad news, Queensland lost the State of Origin game last night.
Hey good to see London won the Olympics. If nothing else you stand a good chance your Son will visit you then (if he has not convinced you to relocate here by then that is).
Good Point. Have just recently started experimenting with Firefox. My perception so far is that it is indeed faster. A bit difficult to be certain, as my 'free' broadband upgrade from 512k to 1M happened the same day I downloaded Firefox. Yes, aware that it is at present probably 'safer' than IE.
