They probably didn't, Just the valve screws directly onto the fitting right up against the inner surface, and I wanted to spread the load over a wider area of the hull - not a concern about the valve's strength.
The skin fitting is supplied over length with instructions to cut it to the correct length to suit the insertion distance into the valve.
