Skill vs Broaching

Hi, I have my Yamaha 26 stopped in the strong wind. Then, tried to turn to an angle but got broaching everytime (no reefing and use No.1 Genova). Do you think if I have enough skill and I should overcome this issue without reefing?

any boat will be difficult to handle with too much sail in a strong wind. when trying to get going from stopped, there is no flow of water over your rudder so it has no effect at all and you will be blown where the wind wants to take you.

the term 'broach' means that with the wind behind you the boat is forced round bringing the wind onto the beam. if this is what you mean, you have too much mainsail up.

your best bet is to reduce sail to a safe level and experiment to see how the boat behaves.

Though you might reduce the out-of-control by dropping the main and running on genoa alone

Just ease off the mainsheet (and possibly kicker) to depower the main. Try to stop it flogging though. Once on your desired course sheet in and enjoy the ride!

Thats happeneded to me - fairly common when overcanvased and a a squall catchges you unawares.
I could n't dump the main as I had somebody fishing over the leeward side at the time and did n't want them to panic.
Just waitted for the gust to pass then the bow paid off a bit (wind change) and off we went again.

The only problem was we had a large Thames barge bearing down towards us as they also caught the wind shiftl.
