Hi all,

I am getting a new rudderstock made up for my Hurley 22, then gluing the two halves of the old rudder back together. I am unsure what design to use for the attachment of the rudder to the skeg. The old setup appeared to be a bodge job. I have tried to get info from other owners and the association etc but have not had any satisfactory results. I think it really boils down to this: should the rudderstock extend all the way down through the rudder and out of the bottom, and should this extension form a pintle which then goes into the bracket mounted on the skeg? Or....should the ruddertsock terminate inside the rudder and then some other system be used for attaching to the skeg?

I understand the need to seal the the rudderstock where it enters/exits rudder by using flexible sealant or glassed in o-rings. If I go for the rudderstock extension option, I'll need to get the end of the stocked turned down on a lathe and also get a delrin bearing made up so it can fit into the skeg bracket.

The photo show skeg-mounted bracket and the old bracket that was through-bolted to the bottom of the rudder, which essentially rotated about a big bolt which acted as a connector/pivot. The drawing is my plan for using the rudderstock as the pintle.

Any thoughts/suggestions?
