Skeg \"flap\"

I've a "flap" of a stiff think plastic/GRP material which is screwed to the skeg and covers the gap atwixt rudder and skeg; see below:

Someone hereabouts once mentioned that this material is used in dinghy sailing and gave it a name - which I've lost! I need some more as mine have ripped after ten years good service - can anyone advise what the stuff is called and from where I might source it?

TIA

Re: Skeg \"flap\"

Measure the thickness and length required and give your local plastics engineering works. though have seen Formica used.

Make sure you drill out the old screw holes and fill them with an epoxy and micro fibres, then drill a pilot hole for the new screws.

Hope this helps,

On a Nauticat? Fill in the holes and forget it!
On my half-tonner it was a flexible strip cut from a cheap rubber doormat.
Must have saved microseconds round the cans!

Re: Skeg \"flap\"

I would think it is the stuff used along the sides of the centreboard slot in dinghies. Try Googling "slot gasket".

After much investigation I ended up using opaque Lexan I got it from a business seller on ebay.

It ended up quite tidy,

I have the same but smaller - stop things jamming in there.

.

I asked the local engineer and he said just to use a piece of plastic so I cut a bit from a hard plastic container. I haven't seen if it is still there but nothing has jammed!

I can't remember what was recommended here either.

Re: Skeg \"flap\"

I get ropes caught in the horizontal slot between the skeg & the balance area of the rudder. I wonder if I could set up a bit of a plastic bottle to cover the gap? Hhhmmm, must give that a bit of careful thought. It is very embarrasing getting caught on the mooring strop when the crew don't bother to tell me the bouy has gone the opposite side of the boat to the mooring!
