We had a Finnish friend with us, who had never been sailing before - it raised a smile (after we knew they were safe) at how, when the skipper was told that a lifeboat was on its way and would be there within 10 minutes, he said in a relieved and polite tone, "Thank you very much."

I was struck by how rough it looked; being a photographer I'm all too aware that what seems significant weather & waves usually looks much less on film, so it must have been rather lumpy - note the ILB couldn't stay alongside.

I'd love to hear the radio chat ( I'm hoping there was one ! ) on the lines of 'we're b*****g off at high speed while leaving our chum on the sinking boat, please be so kind as to pick him up from the 'oggin' !
 
Solent C.G. are advising that it's superstructure is visible at low water and that the temporary marks put down have disappeared.

Be careful out there!

I was chatting to a couple of fishermen down in Southsea earlier today and Sea Bird was a whelker running out of The Camber in Portsmouth. She had a big tank across her stern which, they believe, may have contributed to her taking on water and then sinking.

For those of you who may be passing the spot in the next week or two here is a picture of the buoy that has been laid to mark her. The picture was taken from Southsea Front just to the west of Langstone Harbour entrance. The pole in the picture is Langstone Fairway post.

it looks like she went down close ashore, BUT I still wonder why she wasn't beached...

Looting might be one reason - after the October 1987 Hurricane put 11 of my clubs' boats ashore members did a 24 hr patrol with dogs - but I'd think anything would be better than sinking...
 
Cancel my last post - I think I may have been fed duff information! :mad:

She is actually 1/2 mile south of The Langstone Fairway post and mid way between that and the Roway Wreck post.

I think they were trying to - she was still powering forwards as the crew were transferring to the lifeboat, and perhaps this is why the lifeboatman stayed on board. But she sank before getting to the beach.
