Just renewed my cover with the same company, however there was an additional clause in the policy which did not appear anywhere in my previous documents. Basically they have added a clause to prevent me sailing single handed unless it is during the hours of daylight only. Does anyone have a policy where single handed sailing is allowed. I don't do much but have in the past done the odd night under sail and anchored or moored up for a rest the following day.

Yep, Bishop Skinner. They cover me single-handed day and night, though the night hours attract(!) a slightly higher excess.

I've been with them (excellent company BTW) ever since they took over the RYA insurance, so many, many years. This may have some bearing on their accommodating me, though I'd check them out as Bill Southgate (one of their directors) is a highly knowledgable and down to earth chap and will sort something out I'm sure.

Hope this helps

Jerry

Write to your insurers and simply state that this clause could put you in very difficult position should you find yourself/boat compromised during darkness, i.e. weather/tide change and you have to move!

We did this, as did my brother-in-law who sails single handed throughout the med. As a result, neither has this ridiculous clause anymore.

Tell your insurer to either remove this clause or fully refund your premium. Brother-in-law is with Pantaenius; try them. Good luck.

I had the same prob with GJW but changed to Pantaneus who don't have this clause.

Pantaneus also give a cover note in several languages and I have found that EVERY marina that I have visited in Spain have required a photocopy of my insurance cover, so it is nice to have a multi-lingual form. I was told that a boat exploded earlier this year on the Costa del Sol, and did not have third party cover so the marina was held liable for the damage to other yachts. This is a big issue at the moment.

How odd, GJW insure me for singlehanded sailing day and night.....got extra excess for doing at night tho. Think from the remarks of other posters on this, must whoever does the policy !!!

I am insured for single handing by Kendal Becker, but I got a letter from them a few weeks ago saying they had retired and passed my business to Edward William Marine Services. I think the policy is with Northern Reef Insurance SA (wherever they are).

Edward William tel no 0870 242 5542 if they will still do it.
