Having trawled through more threads than I care to think about (sewing machine choice is akin to anchoring threads), I am looking at getting a Singer 4411https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008CCK4RC/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1. Not for serious sail repairs but one or two layers of canvas and the likes. Has anyone got any views on it or alternatives?
many thanks
Chris
That machine got some stinking comments on quality and reliability, on some sailing forums, when I looked a couple of years ago.
Most modern domestic machines are too light, unless you can bolt or clamp them down, a do not have enough room under the arm for bulky fabrics.
Your wife would find zig-zag handy but I would not get hung up on the idea.
At the moment I have Reads oscillating hook machine which is only spectacular in one respect - it's ability to cope with heavy threads with zero fuss. Here is a bit about rotary and oscillating machines:

And should you want to equip yourself with one of these types here is a list from a spares site:

I have used a number of machines, mostly with success, but the most frustrating thing is often getting them to perform easily with all weights of thread.
