I have a photo, from the early 80's, of the open fishing boats off loading and the guys carting the fish up from the beach in the wide brims of their tin sombreros.
Not to mention one of the company ships ran aground there with a full cargo of acetone. Caused a slight stir...
We anchored off the beach last time we were there so I can’t remember what the pontoons were like. Sorry to hear it’s closed as it’ll make anchoring a bit crowded.
I remember the last time I was there in a brisk north easterly. Approach and berthing was difficult especially single handed and the pontoons were bouncing around until the early hours of the morning. The time before that, they told me to stay on the fuel berth overnight because the pontoons were "dangerous". Maybe the pontoons have "fatigued" and need repair. Just guessing. I wonder if they have removed all the local boats or is it just closed for visitors?
