Does anyone know if it is possible to remote control a Simrad TP10 Tillerpilot?
All I want to do is be able to send 1 and 10 degree course corrections without getting up from my new companionway comfy seat...

I have one and there's no means of connecting any remote control to it.

I just try and persuade the crew to operate it while I shelter behind the sprayhood:D

As Parsifal says the TP10 has no external inputs so you will need one of the bigger Simrad pilots (TP20/30 or TP22/32) if you want remote control. Be careful if you upgrade because the remotes for the 20/30 and 22/32 are different and not interchangeable, as well as being very difficult to get hold of in any case.

As far as I'm aware, the TP10 has exactly the same circuit board as the TP20/30, but just doesn't have the extra wiring connections, so theoretically it should be quite possible to add a wire to give the extra NMEA and Canbus functionality.

That's correct- here's a pic of my hybrid TP10/20, 'Marvin' The TP10 was used in the rain..big mistake.. I cut and pasted the leads from lower board to buttons and removed the NMEA leads just leaving the +-ve external conductors. The grey upper came from a pilot with duff mechanicals.
If the OP gets a TP20, he could drive the boat using a mouse from a plotter screen and not need a dedicated remote?

Interesting! didn't know that, thanks. Another example of selling much the same thing but 'down-speccing' it just by leaving out a wire or two!

Yes, it's surprising that they include the additional electronic components. I suppose it's cheaper to do that than have the complexity of different PCBs to stock.

All the circuit diagrams and PCB layouts are in the Simrad service manual, which includes very good details on how to re-assemble the case properly to try to ensure watertight performance.

I have a TP 30 and a TP32. Both work in exactly the same way with the cabled remote.

That's interesting as my understanding was the HR20 remote operated the TP20/30 via 0183 and the HR22 remote operated the TP22/32 via Canbus/N2K. Seems not, you learn something every day I guess.

Which of the two remotes do you have? do they both use 0183?

I suppose we'll get there eventually! You need to buy an HR22 remote control, which will come with installation instructions. It's a discontinued product, but you may be able to find one.

There are two different types of remote simrad controls, the HR20 and HR22. AFAIK the 20 controlled he TP20/30 via 0183 and the 22 the TP22/32 via N2k (see post above). However Vyv says he has one handset which controls both a 30 and a 32 pilot, but he hasn't said which handset it is. I think you are right that the OP needs to find the HR22, but we need some clarification form experience from Vyv as to whether each HR handset can control all the tillerpilots (ie there is no difference as he has said) or not. If the HR20 and HR22 are essentially identical, the OP can widen his search.

My apologies, my spare tiller pilot is a TP300, not a 32. I don't see it very often so mis-remembered the number. The remote is an HR20.

Thanks Vyv good to know. I don't know what the TP300 is, is it an older Navico one?

I bought a HR20 off ebay a while back to wire into my TP20 (not done it yet) was worried that maybe I'd not bought the right one..... :)

Cheers

There's an older thread on this forum which says that Simrad have advised that the HR20 will not control a TP32 due to different protocols. So, by implication the OP here needs the HR22.

I bought the TP300 from a forumite on For Sale and don't know much about it. It certainly has the appearance of being newer than the TP30. I changed the plug it came with to the six pin one that matches the one on the TP30 and tried it a couple of times to check that all was well. That was about two years ago, since when it is stored as a spare.
