A friend has given me the above VHF radio, but it's lacking the external speaker.
I'm trying to source a suitable speaker....according to the manual, the original was 8ohm 8watt, but I can only find 4ohm versions.
Would a 4ohm speaker work or not?
Does anyone on here have a suitable speaker which they would like to exchange for some beer vouchers?

A 4ohm speaker will almost surely work, but you take the the risk of frying the amplifier, particularly if using the speaker for long time and at high volume.
Just in case you don't know, the 8300 actually doesn't need a separate speaker, because there is one in the mic. You just have to use it as you would with a telephone.

[/ QUOTE ] Not tried Maplin then. I think i am right in saying that domestic speakers , portable radios etc, are normally 8 ohm while car speakers are 4 ohm. So take one out of an old radio, tele or something.

Thanks, yes I know that the handset has a speaker, but this is surely going to be too quiet to hear if someone is calling me up and I'm in the cockpit, unless I turn the volume up and then I'll risk perforating my eardrum when I use the handset /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks VicS, I haven't used Maplins (out in the sticks), but I'll have a look at their website to see if they have anything suitable...............do you think that SWMBO will notice if the sound on the TV stops working /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I sounds as though what you realy need is a waterproof speaker for fitting in the cockpit.

This one perhaps says for 4ohm and 8 ohm systems

Thanks VicS, a good find!, that looks like it will do the job. I just remembered that I'm going to the boat show on Tuesday, so I think that I'll have a look around there to see if there's something suitable (& cheap /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif), if not I will order one of these.........

Thanks VicS, a good find!,

[/ QUOTE ] Not relly its something I knew existed. There used to be flush mounting speakers as well that could be set into the coaming so with luck you may find one of those at the boat show.

Dont forget to wave at us all as you pass in front of the webcams. ( or make some other gesture at all us saddos watching them (

I use my RS8300 with an external cockpit speaker. The marine 8 ohm are easy to find, though pricey and I only ever find them in pairs. But they only seem to last a few years, so a spare is not a bad idea...
