The Simrad CP30 is installed on the boat and comes with a C-Map cartridge dated 2001 /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif !!!
Anyone with any experience of this Chartplotter and is it worth trying to upgrade the C-Map ?? if so would I also be able to connect a DSC VHF to it ???
Dave

The plotter will output NMEA position data to a DSC radio - connect the radio to the white (NMEA+) and brown (NMEA-) wires of the plotter.

I've got the very same plotter with a repeater unit in the cockpit.

As pvb says, you can get the NMEA data out of it to go into your DSC set no problem.

CMap wont upgrade the card you have, but will take in part exchange against a later version. Can't recall off the top of my head which size (geographic coverage) you can go to, but I certainly did this last year.

It will cost you about £120 to get the new card, but it will work and give you greater coverage.

The other problem with the CP30 which I am experiencing at present, is that it has an internal battery whcih is not rechargeable. This helps it retain its software and other data while its turned off. When the battery runs flat, it takes ages (like 30 mins) to refind the satellites when you turn it back on, in fact mine has failed altogether sometimes.

I am just waiting for a local guy to replace the battery for me.

The repeater in the cockpit is totally dependant on receiving data from the main unit which it does via a serial (very slow) connection. So it doesnt refresh the image very quickly, but as long as you dont press the zoom in and out too quickly it is fine.

Not the most modern or greatest of kit, but all the time it is still working, best to keep it IMHO - plenty of other things to spend money on !!

Hope this helps

Thanks both that's a great a help - don't really want to replace it unless it's necessary, as you say there's a whole list of things to get first !!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's like a CP30 but just a slightly model number which I cant recall.

It looks the same, and has the same controls. Unlike modern kit, it will only display the same as the main unit, and if you change anything on one it automatically changes on the other.

Can be a bit irritating if you are looking at one unit, and somebody else is looking at the other and decides to 'fiddle' !

Simrad cp30

Hello,

New member to this site. Hello to all.
Noticed that Moodynick mentioned that he was going to have the internal battery of his Simrad CP30 changed. I too have this GPS and I changed the internal battery of my unit but now the unit does not want to work. The screen makes a slight flick when power is connected, as it did before, but now nothing happens when the PWR on the unit is pushed. I did leave the unit without the internal battery for a few months. Did anyone have any issues like mine.
Thanks Ed
