Simrad 3G Radar & MFD - stopped showing targets just interference

That's interesting...
I'm currently speaking to Navico about a replacement they might have available.
I'll ask about the warranty ?

Is your new Halo+ installed on the boat and running?

Not yet, I’m waiting for an adapter cable so I don’t have to re-run the main radar cable. I’ll remove the RI10 which seems to be another weak spot and connect directly to the NEP2 ethernet hub.

Ah i see, be interested to know what it's like when you start using it.

I think my RI10 is functioning ok still. I hope :)

UPS says my cable should be here on Monday so I should know then. The bumph on the Halo+ says NMEA heading data isn’t required for MARPA (my GS25 doesn’t provide data for MARPA or AP) so I’ll be interested to see how it works.

That would be good - so you get MARPA without any other kit needed?
You also get a nice blue light off the radome too - very flash

Up and running again. We’ll see how long this one lasts. I’ve mounted it on rubber washers to negate some vibration in the hope it doesn’t disintegrate, like the 3G

Great stuff, must be pleased to get it all working again. Good idea on the rubber washers.

Re HALO vs 3G, is MARPA now looking like it's active?
Also do you also still need a heading sensor for chart overlay?

Don’t know about the MARPA yet. Can’t really comment on the necessity for the heading sensor as I’ve got one (GS25) on the network already. I’d guess it will still be necessary though.

Good news! A HALO unit has arrived.

I had a short winge a couple weeks back via the comments section on a US Simrad advert on Facebook ironically promoting the use of radar... I said I used to have a 3G and loved it but broke soon after warranty and still waiting for a replacement. Didn't expect anything to come of it was just venting :)
I then got a swift PM from a US helpdesk person a few hours later who passed my details onto Navico UK.

A few days later they got in touch and apologised profusely for taking payment back in Oct 2020 considering there was no stock and advised 3G due May 2021.
I thought I would cheekily ask if there was any chance of an upgrade to Halo if they were in stock given months of hassle and short life of the old 3G unit.
To their credit they said it wasn't normally something they would entertain but given I had paid so long ago when there was nothing in sight they would sort me out. There was one B&G Halo20 in stock they could send me if I didn't mind the brand change and it arrived a few days ago along with the adapter cable.
Couldn't care less what the sticker says, stoked to have a new upgraded unit for no extra cash.

Not fitted it yet but thankful to the very kind Simrad tech person in the US who escalated my case.
Case closed!

Fantastic result ?

Very grateful to have found this thread after experiencing the very same blank screen showing just interference. Radome icon was spinning on top bar of MFD, radar was recognized and no faults shown. Simrad tech admitted the radome was toast after an hour long wait on the phone to run through all the symptoms.

The good news is they're honoring the warranty. Bad news is I'm three years in on the five year warranty period and they want me to pay half the cost of new.

Thing is, the tech told me they'd replace not and then sent an email asking for the address to send it and never once mentioned having to pay for it until I replied with my address!

Givebn so many of the 3G radars have failed it seems obvious it's a either or both a design or manufacturing defect. So why should the consumer have to pay anything?

Have they said what they are going to send you, when and whether it will be a new unit with warranty? Photo of mine after failure, just interference with no solid returns. I also noticed it rattled when I removed it, something large obviously loose inside.

Sorry to hear another 3G dead.
Good luck with getting a replacement - seems that paying £700 and waiting months is the only way unless you flush enough to buy a new one outright.
I totally agree there must be something wrong with those 3G Navico radomes for so many of them to fail.
Not sure if the 4G was affected in the same. Seem to see a lot of those still active on boats that clearly have enough cash to replace if they had broken.

Let us know how you get on.

Having issues with simrad 4g broadband radar just showing clutter no targets
That's exactly the problem I had when my radome broke. I suspect your radome is now faulty and maybe dead. Seems a lot of the 3G and 4G ones from a few years ago suddenly fail without warning. There was no repair option with mine.

On the plus side, if you do end up getting one of the newer replacement Navico brand Halos, they seem to be pretty trouble free and with better features (touch wood)... Not heard of them having any common failure issues like with the 3/4G ones.
Mines been fine for last 3+yrs - hopefully I haven't just jinxed it!

Hi thanks for the reply seems no one wants to even look at it as no spare parts available, am I right in understanding if I go the halo option the old lead just plugs in the same?
