Before I go trapesing around bike shops in Gran Canaria, does anyone know if the roller chain inside a simpson lawrence s-l hyspeed anchor windlass is standard chain which might be found in a bike shop?
Ta in hope of a yes answer

Yes, you're in luck. I replaced the chains in this very old S&L hyspeed a little while ago. Standard chain length (about 12 quid, if I remember right), which you'll have to split to get the two lengths and you'll also need a couple of joining links - you can just about see one at the very top - to make the re-assembly easier.

Ta Les, that's what I wanted to hear /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Chain's slightly different than on my dahon foldup, otherwise that would be less of a bike now and more like a very tall skateboard /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you bust the old freewheel trying to get it off the shaft put a blob of weld on it so you have something to chisel against, I rebuilt my winch for about a £10 courtesy of ebay with bmx bike bits.

There are several sizes of bike chain. It looks like you want the size that suits a single speed or Sturmey-Archer bikes rather than any of the Derailleur systems. IIRC (and I don't always!) it is 3/8" imperial rather than 5/16". Couldn't convert that to metric tho'!

Renold roller chain is what you need. Cones in various sizes from the "Bike Chain" size to very big industral sizes.

Try to find a power transmission supplier or some bearing suppliers also do supply roller chain.

Ta all, found one. €15 for 2 chains, extra split links and the little press to split the chain. All in about 5 mins in a bike shop in Las Palmas. Good days shopping.
Ta.
