I have aquired an old Simpson Lawrence HY-SPEED windlass which needs refurbishment, can anyone help with a question. There is what could have been a grease nipple on the left hand side, but the top has broken off, so it could have been an oiling point. does anyybody know if this type of windlass was greased or did it have an oil bath, I suspect grease, anybody know better?

You can get spares here. A couple of grease nipples are listed for the 510 windlass.

There is also a filler plug on the exploded parts diagram and new versions do have an oil bath. See here .

That's exactly what they are; a pair of free wheel ratchets mounted in opposite ways on the shaft to give the push-me-pull-you effect when you move the lever [double acting]. They were the originals, I had to replace the chain - bought for a few quid from the local bike shop - as it had completely rusted up and snapped as soon as I tried to flex it. It appears to work a treat in the shed. It'll not be tried in anger until my restoration is a lot further progressed - 2012, I hope.

18 tpi single speed bike parts and on the op's windlass the sprockets go the same way for both chains but one has the chain mounted on the front side while the othe goes around the back to give you motion on the forward and rear stroke. The first goes aound a couple of idler pulleys. The grease nipple is for the gipsy while the oil bath is for the chain.
Getting the sprocket assembly off the shaft is a right sod as in normal use they areboth being tightened up so by the time you have wheighed anchor a couple of thousand times they could be said to be tight. I had to get a local engineer to grind them off for me but after that it was straight forward. I got the casingpowder coated for about £30.
