Simpson Lawrence Double Action Lever Windless servicing?

Like everything else installed on my newly acquired boat it seems to have received no maintenance in it's 35 year history & is consequently seized.
Does anybody know how you get the clutch cone off,it seems to have a sort of split tube pipe going through it's center & the center of the main shaft.Presumably you just drive it out with a drift?

Any tips on servicing the thing from anyone that has owned one or is familiar with it would be gratefully appreciated

Hi, I am pleased that I am not the only forumite with a boat like that, I had to use a good deal of "wellie" to get mine apart but it was very easy once you knew what to hit!

I am not sure exactly what you are trying to get off but this link will download an exploded diagram ( I cant remember where I found it but I kept a copy of the pdf). If this doesnt help get back to me.

Chances are the internals are shagged. Save yourself a few quid and replace the innards with single speed bicycle free wheels (they are the correct thread) and chain. Be prepared to shave about 1mm off the rocker that drives the chain but it still leaves you plenty "meat" on it.

I seemed to successfully download that file but when I tried to open it I got the message file not found
Anyway I have an exploded view with the owners manual (thankfully the previous owners seem to have been hoarders) & after looking at it again I can see the pin & it does look like a simple matter of driving it out.Thanks.

I shall cross that bridge when I come to it but thanks for that useful information.
I doubt the innards are shagged through over use as as far as I can see the whole boat has actually had very little real use just years of neglect.
Could sea water have actually got inside & broken down the components? I am looking forward to finding out.
One interesting point,When I was working on the boat in Belgium one of my neighbours a Belgium truck mechanic suggested pouring Coca Cola inside to clean out the gunge & I thought he was joking.Then on getting back here my neighbour offered similar advice.Does Coca Cola really have those magical properties?

It's now like new, just need to refit it to the boat!

Is it phosphoric acid? Well anyway, Coca Cola is a mild acid and can help clean off many deposits and etch some metals. It certainly cleans me out if I drink it all night!

Thanks for the link but the prices are extortionate.£3-66p to send a spring pin through the post!......would have bought some bearings but feel like I am being ripped off.....shall carry on bodging

Thanks for the tip but the innards are ok after a bit of a cafuffel getting at them.Think I may even have improved on the bearing & have drilled a hole in the top to make sure that oil can get to the highest recesses where I doubt oil very often got the chance to go even if there was any in there in the first place.

Would have been worth a try as it turned out.I would recommend anybody in a similar situation just tries flushing the brutes out thoroughly before ripping them apart to get at the innards.
