Too mean to buy a Loos gauge, I wonder if there's a diy version? I can borrow a real one to calibrate it against. I only need to make "too high/too low " measurements, not actual numerical values, for three tensions. Google isn't helping!

I bought the Loos gauge (from Salty John of this parish) and it really is the dogs danglies, being quick and easy to use. I have tried the method of measuring the wire stretch. It does work, but you need an accurate way of measuring the small gap between the end of the stick and the top of the fitting. If I was to go that route I would make up a gauge in the form of a long tapered metal strip marked with its width at intervals.

I second forking out for the Loos gauge - seems like a lot of money but actually it's one of the most useful things I've bought for the boat. Worth spending the extra ££s on the professional version as it can be left on the stay while adjusting. The biggest performance boost on our boat this year was following the Selden rig tuning guide and applying the correct tension with the Loos gauge. Fractional rigs need a lot more tension than I would ever have risked putting in without it.
