Around Teddington, 8 KPH can easily be recognised as half the speed of Connaught or Merrie Thames......

Sounds like we share the same wash! Considering its size compared to the others, merrie thames can be a very big irritation.

Wash only and do what's right for other boats and riverbank, no interest in what speed I'm doing, that's just a number.

Have used GPS but now know that 2000 rpm is 8 kph. Luckily boat has a very low wash hull shape so need to slow because of wash is rare. Previous Dutch steel boat was extremely dirty, even at minimum speed and required a stop engine to avoid sinking rowers!
