Simon 'the weather' .... can you 'dumb it down' a-bit?

Just need to add a visual check on your knickers

To ensure I'm not too phased by the inaccurate forecasts when hours away from somewhere safe?

I do! :)

Anyone wanting a dumbed down forecast should just switch the TV on just after the news at around 22.30, there some tart will stand in front of a chart, wave her arms around and read from a script.

Never believe the TV & their Met-Office carp ....... but I do appreciate tasty 'Totty' ...... Simon! ..... you need to change the presenter. ;)

even if it does hurt my second-class brain a little.

Well! ..... with my background I don't stand any chance changing this anytime soon ..... eh! :P ... (& I am referring to Moi!) :(

If the OP finds it hard to understand

I dont! ..... it's just that I don't need all the (high-level) (pun intended) info to help my sailing ..... just as I don't need to understand the workings of a Jet engine to fly in a plane.

& every time I believe the Met-Office & they get it totally wrong the more I dislike the weather teams.

but! .... not a bad little debate .... & has brought our Simon to the fore ... :) ..... hot 'Totty' for the next update / video ... please! ;) ...... well! ..... it works for them!!

No, dont dumb down please Simon, we learn lots from every video.

+1 and plus another +1. Simon is the best thing to happen to weather forcasting since sliced bread as he gives his opinion, his reasoning and is honest about his doubts.

His telephone service (there is a charge) is invaluable to me when I start looking at best day to return home X channel. One bad Xing and I loose SWMBO and sailing holidays of 4 weeks. If necessary after Simons realistic advice we can alway dump boat or just SWMBO for home journey on Cherbourg ferry.

I think Simon's level of presentation is just right. The quality of comment from TV forecasting is between patronising and flippant at best, so it's pleasant to be treated like an adult occasionally. :-)

For anybody wanting to see what the jetsream is up to - this US Navy Met site will show you

https://www.fnmoc.navy.mil/wxmap_cg...=nvg_europe2&prod=w30&dtg=2013061406&set=Core

Ignore HTTPS warnings -they simply reserve the right to track public users.....

Looks like it's going to lurk about over or South of the UK. Bad news really -keeps mild air away from much of the UK and allows low pressure systems to feed south / s-east from Iceland to NW Scotland.
Another not very glorious summer.....

If you want an easy "Dumbed down" weather forecast then there are plenty of those to be had. The hard part is finding a decent forecast from a knowledgeable source, something that Simon does an excellent job of and I hope he continues to do so. I have learned much from watching his videos, such as how important the jetstream is to the UK weather. I've also seen him speak at the boat show and again, I learned much there too. As someone previously mentioned, a little bit sinks in every time.

Don't dumb down Simon

+1 for keeping your forecasts as they are Simon. I learn something every time I watch one. I often forget some bits too but regular watching does help some of it go in permanently. Your book "The sailor's book of the Weather" helps too.

The BBC dumbed down their forecast a few years ago when they decided we were too thick to understand synoptic charts and stopped showing them so now I seldom watch TV forecasts.

Keep up the good work Simon!

Just want to add to the chorus of do not dumb down Simon. I like to hear your predictions and your rationale behind the forecast. Your weather reports are one of the few sources I trust.

I'll start looking at Simon's outlooks, having read this thread. The worst weather info by far, must be the brief updated reports on my phone...which give present temperature, rain/sun and highest/lowest in prospect for the following day...

...but, when the next day comes, (and the temperature/weather is invariably different from forecast), hour by hour the "forecast" maximum figures change...in other words, it's not a forecast at all, just a wild guess followed by ongoing retrospective updates from the thermometer.

My fault for keeping the function on my phone's display. It doesn't even show wind-strength.

But even the BBC weather online is really poor on wind-strengths. When I'm a few short miles from the place where it's being measured, and it's audibly blowing a steady force 5-6, branches bowing wildly outside the window, it's irritating to see the reported "12mph" close to the shore. I'm not in a geographical wind-funnel, or subject to weird local anomalies...and I dare to presume that the weather station's anemometer isn't protected from reality.

I'd have thought the crew at the weather station would learn from their routine under-estimation. Do they quote the minimum wind speed we can expect? Who for?

I'll make a habit of watching Simon's take on weather, henceforth. :)
