Most forumites will probably already know about Simon's brilliant weather information available on this forum. Having read his book I booked onto the 1 day course at his weather school today. It was fantastic and has given me a new confidence in having a go at all things meteorological and will help me immensely when planning passages.

I don't know what the RYA currently offer in the way of accreditation for weather knowledge other than that in their Day Skipper/Yachtmaster courses etc but the course was so good I felt it would be great to see it accredited by the RYA. If anyone from the RYA is reading this then what about it?

Usual caveat - not connected in any way just passing on a good experience!
 
I concur, was there too! It was well worth the 320 miles round trip to sit, listen, talk and learn more about weather, and to learn some secrets about the forecasters!

Simon is passionate about weather, and that comes out very early in the day, I'm sure he would be happy to talk about his chosen subject for hours, that's no criticism mind you, he has a wealth of knowledge he is only too willing to share.

Treat yourself to the course, you'll love it.

Really pleased that you enjoyed the course. As you found out so much to fit in one day but hopefully much of it made sense and will improve your own forecasting skills.

I'd be delighted to talk to the RYA about getting the course accredited. It's certainly a course that I think helps with safety at sea as it helps all sailors 'think weather' and improves your own ability to make your own forecast using the web, shipping forecast and your own observations.

Look forward to hearing off the RYA!

We have Simon to thank for an uneventful first Biscay crossing on our four month "big adventure" down to the Med. My wife had been on one of his courses and sung his praises, so he was the obvious choice when we needed a custom forecast for the crossing. The RYA could do no better.
 
Simon, do you ever think of doing a course "darn sarf"?

It would be cheaper for a dozen of us to pay your travel and hotel than drive up to you.

What do you think?

Yes, absolutely no objection to running a course down south. It has been suggested before, and I am happy to oblige if suitable premises can be found. How about a YWB.com course?

...just announced the next Sailing Weather School (Part 1) date.

It will be held on 30th January 2010, and I have kept the price the same for this one at £115.

If you want to run a course down here Simon, having been on your last course and knowing the type of venue you need, I would be happy to do a little research for you in securing a similar one in this area.

I did the RYA Yachtmaster course, and passed, but did not understand much about the weather at all. Where is the course being held and what are contact details? Got an engagement on that weekend but maybe possible to alter.
 
If there's any interest in doing a course in central Reading on a weekend, we can use my office which is just near the station. There's a meeting room that will fit around 10 people or I could arrange something for more people in the open part of the office.

Alternatively, my local village hall is available for only a few £ - it's between Reading and Oxford.

If anyone is interested in this option, please PM me and I'll co-ordinate.
 
Hi all,

Okay, looks like a course in 'the south' would be welcome. Oxford/Reading good for me.

I'd need 10 on the course to make it worth the travel and not running the course here.

npf1 did PM and can cordinate, but I'm happy to take the booking etc... if I can get enough people interested.

Do we go for it? Please let others on the forum know and they can come here and say yeah or nah. I'll put together a booking for which can then take the bookings.

My diary is looking pretty full January, so it may be that if we can get takers quickly I can change the 30th January to be the'southern' course?
