We fancy going! Any tips anyone regarding the harbour? I know it's anchor and lines. Are they helpful there? Has anyone anchored in Panormitis? It looks lovely. Thanks.

If you are confident about berthing stern-to and not uptight about crossed anchors it is well worth going there. The water is deep, so you need to ensure the anchor is on the bottom before going astern to the quay. There are marineros (what's that in Greek?) to take your lines for a small fee €5 last time we were there. They don't allow lines to be taken wider than one berth, which is fine by me but upsets some people. The harbour is pretty chaotic with lots of action from everything from cruise ships down but we liked the place very much for a couple of days.
Panormitis is fabulous, good holding, good shelter and nice walks.

Viv I agree about everything other than good holding! Spent a night fending off others dragging on to us there!

Thanks for the replies. I guess it depends how much wind there is overnight. We spent a night over on the Turkish coast and in the morning the line ashore was slack and the anchor chain went straight down, but we hadn't moved at all.

We motored around a bit until we found some clear sand and had no problems, although only for one night. It's a pity others don't anchor the same way.

We have spent many nights in Panormittis and sat out several gales there. We have never dragged. We have seen a few boats drag, usually those further down into the bay where it is very weedy. It can be a bit lumpy near the entrance in a blow, so we try to get in off the pair of houses left of the taverna. Further into the bay than that gets shallow and weedy.
Last time we were there the yacht quay was nearly completed. It was left of the ferry berth near the taverna, and had room for about a dozen boats stern-too. The concrete wasn't finished but a few boats were using it already. Hopefully that will get rid of some of the boats that are not good at anchoring !
Pethi is lovely too. We have had some windy nights there, and seen a lot of boats drag. Mostly they were too deep for the amount of chain they carried. Left of the water boat jetty near the waterside taverna is pretty good holding. You can often get in quite close there.
Symi harbour is fairly deep on the north side. The south side is better but there is a noisy bar there open until the early hours. The mooring men like to decide where you will go though ! Last time we were there the boat next to us had 4 metres of chain out, beautifully hooked into a fisherman's mooring. He wasn't going anywhere so the mooring men told him to ignore it until morning, when they would get a diver if needed.

Do not take fuel on the fuel garage/dock as you enter on your port side in Simi, when the vomit comit arrives and leaves or even when the hydrafoils come and go the attendants on the dock take 10 paces back to leave you fighting to save your top sides, then give you a look that say's 'that's the first time thats happened...............' yeah right, in the last hour. Try and stay away from the quay closer to the head of the u shaped basin as there is a lot of old fouled ground tackle laying around..
Lovely town mind, and the PP are probably the miserablist bunch I have ever met, to the point of shaking their hands for just a little too long to make it just a bit creepy. There is a good drinks shop which will deliver to your boat (and to the quay in Pethi), also a nice restaurant Pantelis on the S Quay.

Can't agree with you regarding the port police..we checked into Symi in June and were "done" by a very charming girl called Artemis.. she was very pleasant and chatty,and we met her later in the evening and had a drink or two with her and her friend.
We never go into Symi town , it can be chaotic ,preferring to anchor in Pedi bay and either walk over to the town, or take the hourly bus, if we have stuff to carry. The supermarket in the town will deliver if you like.
As Vyv says, Panormitis is fab.,and a great place to sit out bad weather.

Thanks for the replies. We've looked at Pedi bay and quite fancied it, how far is it into Simi Town? If we come from Turkey can we go into Pedi or Panormitis? Or do we need to go into Simi as a port of entry first?

From Pedi to Symi town is about 35-40 minutes walk. There are some very good local tavernas and cafes in the village that you pass through at the top of the hill.
By bus it is about 15 minutes, as the bus takes an indirect route.
If you need to check in, you can leave the boat in Pedi and take your docs. over with you into Symi and check in. We did confirm that this was OK.
From Panormitis, it would be a very long way, I doubt if anyone would be interested enough to check that you had been to Symi first.

"Simi" is the Icelandic word for telephone. In order to keep their language pure they search into their ancient literature for sources. "Simi" actually means a long thread.
Has nothing to do with the thread I realize, but it was a reaction when I saw the word.
