I have an old Nokia 6110 with software and I intend using it for E mail in Spain/ Portugal/Italy and France. I intent to use local SIM cards. The phone works on 900MHz so the card needs to support that band and it also needs to be "data enabled"
Anybody got any names of products to look for or other advice, especially in Spain and Italy?

I think you'll find the 6110 is a bi-channel mobile.

If, as I assume, you intend to use the infra-red with a PC for accessing the internet you will have to find a local national ISP - AOL have a number of continental european numbers but will charge you for accessing them.

You can, of course, use your UK ISP but will probably find the cost at 9600 baud is uneconomic - far more feasible if less convenient to use are local internet cafes.

I use tmobile in the uk with gprs, this can (and works in France) be use for data at no extra cost when abroard. You just pay for the data you us. I pay £10 a month for 10MBs

I have a Nokkia too. Vodaphone are very good, by purchasing a local SIM card in both Spain and Portugal and using pay as you go it is possible to use Vodaphone as the ISP. The GPRS process (used in conjunction with the laptop thro' an infrared port) takes a while to set up via the free help line, but is efficient and reasonably priced as long as you don't download too much info.

The 6110 is a single band 900MHz phone.

A visually identical 6130 is a single band 1800MHz unit.

Both frequencies are populated by networks in Spain, but I am unsure about data support, which can be a challenge, and the best you will get is switched data at 9,600 bps.

That's fine for simple e-mails but anything with attachment will make you die of old age.

P'raps time to get a GPRS phone instead, but as someone else said, you'll pay £10.00 / Meg of data exchanged if roaming.

Therefore consider buying a local subscription and pay 3-5 Euros / Meg.
