After many years' service my Silva Star instruments (GPS repeater and depth) have started to leak and show signs of terminal illness. I've brought them home and put them in a dessicator cabinet but don't hold out much hope of lasting success. Inevitably my thoughts must turn to alternatives.

Does anyone know which of the currently available instruments will
- fit in the same holes
- work with the existing in-hull depth transducer?

Welcome to the forums / madhouse!

My pessimism about my ability to resurrect these instruments was misplaced. They were eventually opened, dried thoroughly and re-built, in one case with a new clear panel on the front, and are once again giving good service.

One of the avenues I went down last year was looking for Silva Star replacements. I didn't find any at anything resembling a sensible price so, though I wish you good luck in your search, I can't hold out much hope for your success.

thank you Tristle.

I also have a Silver Star GPS repeater and depth sounder/log - do you also find the log never actually works.

Interestingly I have a spare, unused display though I can’t remember if it’s the GPS repeater or the log.

The instruments themselves are identical in size to the NASA Clipper - I have Clipper covers on them.

The NASA NMEA repeater would be a straight swap and interestingly has the same screen layout as the Silver Star - makes me wonder if NASA maybe bought Silver Star and therefore if the transducer would work with the NASA equivalent.

I don't have a log transducer, just an in-hull depth transducer and use a GPS input for speed over ground (SOG).

My original covers blew away and, like you, I've replaced them with Clipper covers. Interesting thought about the Clipper instruments: I'll bear that in mind if my current instruments give up the ghost.

AFAIK the Silva line of nautical instruments was first rebranded Nexus, which after a few years was sold to Garmin.
