Last year we had a couple of major jobs to do. One was a replacement sprayhood (just the fabric, not the frame). Quotes in Marmaris ranged up to 2000Euro; one guy's quote included 12 metres of Sunbrella (it is not a big sprayhood), another wanted 300Euro a day labour - for 3 days. In the end we paid 500Euro to Star Upholstery for a very satisfactory job.
Second job was replacement standing rigging. The two main suppliers in Marmaris each quoted around 3000Euro (supply only, not fitting); this for a very standard 2 spreader rig on a 14.5 metre mast. We ordered from Ocean Rigging, Lymington and had it Fedexed to Rhodes (to avoid Turkish customs problems). Top quality gear and, even allowing for transport, saved £1200 over Marmaris prices.
It seems there are too many people with more money than sense around the Marmaris area. Unfortunately, this makes life difficult for the rest of us.

Similar comments from refugees from Turkey (including Turks) prices have escalated to silly levels and cruising Greece is far more economical.

Just had a shaped and planed 1m long marine ply rudder blade made for my day boat to replace the one broken out sailing. It was done straight away and cost me 20TL (£6.00). Some marinas do charge a lot for work through their on site contractors but a little research particularly in your local sanay and you'd be amazed at the service and prices you get.

I had quite a bit of work done at Offshore Sailing located at Albatross Marina. Their workmanship was the best I've personally seen and the prices were very fair. As an example, they replaced 6 lewmar hatch acrylic's for 100 euro each including labor. I was so impressed that I'm going to bring Palarran back there for the winter of 2015 and have them do a refit / awlgrip job.

We don't have a permanent base - keep on moving. Finike last year, Sudan the year before, Licata next winter.
Wonder if the fact that you were not based in Marmaris had an effect on the prices quoted which do seem very high.

Good morning:

I replaced my own hatch acrylic's a couple of years ago and although I don't remember the actual cost I can assure you that it was much less than 100 Euros which equals 288 lira. Suspect this is another example of someone comparing the cost he/she would expect to pay at home with the price charged in Turkey and thinking that he got a great deal. Please be aware that a policeman with 5 years experience is paid 45 lira a day - those acrylics cost more than a copper would earn in a week. When looked at from this perspective, I don't think it was such a great deal after all.

Cheers

Morning Squeaky

As you and I know there is Acrylic and Acrylic and then there is Turkish acrylic ;). I am never certain that making comparisons such as yours is meaningful, cleaners in our village get 100TL per day, particularly with work that is carried out in an enclosed environment such as a marina where they do not even use local currency, except to demonstrate the large profits that are being made.

Good morning:

Yes, we know that there are various grades of Acrylic but your comment seems to suggest that Palarran might have been given low grade local acrylic makes it even less of a "good deal". Several land based friends pay a local house cleaner 50TL a day so the cleaners you refer to are doing very well but even at 100TL it seems that each hatch cost almost equal to three days wages for these cleaners. Can you imagine paying three days wages to repair to a hatch in Europe?

My point is that many rip-offs happen when visitors mentally compare the price quoted locally with the expected price at home and end up thinking they have obtained a "good deal" when, in fact, they have been ripped-off and taken for a "sucker". I wish visitors would pay more attention to the local economy before publicizing their "good deals".

This bugs me because when I ask for quotes I am often given some ridiculous quote by a serviceman who has had experience with such visitors and I end up in an argument and have to go elsewhere. Where ever possible I try to establish some sort of relationship by using the same service man so I am less often ripped off.

Cheers

Jack

No I am actually suggesting the opposite that it is that price because it is good quality and not the normal off the shelf material which is often quoted. My experience is that when discussing any work you have to often get beyond what is normally supplied to what you actually want with resultant increases in price. I agree about the mental comparison and also advocate shopping around particularly in the local sanay, mind you might have to smuggle it into the yard. What you will have difficulty understanding unless you live here for some time are the differing levels of pricing depending on who you are,and where you are located , but this is a fact of life in many parts of the world as I have found out.
