Winter drawers on! My silk long johns which I've worn for years under mid layer thermals now resemble wide mesh fish nets. The firm Silking which used to market silk underware, sleeping bag liners, etc. seems to have gone out of business. Anyone know an alternative source?

Try a camping/hiking/mountaineering shop, I have them for working offshore, try also a rig workclothes type place, if you are anywhere near such a gaff! I'll find out the name of the manufacturer for you, as soon as I can.

This stuff looks similar http://www.venturewear.co.uk/ click on silk thermal wear.
However I would say that as a long time user of silk I've now gone down the fleece route and I find the new plastic fleece style better.

Anyway got to go and lie down, put "silk underwear" into Google omitting the "thermal".V-interesting but probably not suitable for offshore use!

Thanks for directing me to Venturewear (Thermasilk). Seems to be the answer and I wonder why none of the outdoor / mountaineering shops I've tried appear to have heard of them. Incidentally, I've tried the plastic fleece type but don't find it as good as natural silk.

Having fallen for all the stuff that says you need non-absorbent material to 'wick' the sweat away, and the thermal (musto etc) base-layer varieties seem to work - is silk non-absorbent, and how does it compare all-round in practice?

Silk is excellent for breathability (which is why I wear it). Unlike the synthetics I also find it cooler if you do start to warm up. Many years ago in a very hot and humid Hong Kong summer raw silk shirts were de rigeur.
Furthermore, if you tell others of your silk underware you'd be surprised at the social responses you get as a bonus.
