I have built a step, which will double as my toolbox. I intend sticking it in place using silicone. The problem I foresee is that as I squeeze the gunk from the tube, it will ooze through to the other side of the plywood. When I push it back, it will ooze back to it's original side - i.e. let the battle of Stingo vs Silicone begin.

Battle tactic no 1: Use low ductile tape (of some sort) on one side of the plywood (but I suspect that once set, the silicone will stick to that and I don't want to leave the tape there). So, can anyone tell me if there is a masking tape/cello tape/duct tape type product the will not stick to set/setting silicone?
Battle tactic no 2: Ask for a different winning strategy on this good parish.

TIA

What about, a narrow strip of clingfilm over the hole, and a wide tape (suct tape or some such) over the top? Might be as well to do a test piece first.

Silicone RTV has pretty poor mechanical; properties and is not a great adhesive anyway, so wherever it goes it won't be too difficult to remove. Sellotape should be fine.

I never use silicone on the boat. In addition to its poor mechanical properties you can't paint over it and it inhibits the curing of epoxy and GRP. Use a marine sealant and leave the silicone for your bathroom at home. Or an acrylic decorator's caulk, which is not bad stuff.

Vyv, is the decorators caulk not bad stuff for the boat or bathroom?

Agree ++ Silicone isn't much good for sticking your bathroom tiles so why use it at all!!
Try CT1, it even sticks underwater. :)
