Huge difference?

i am sure that the civil servants that worked with me would take exception to being looked down upon in such a manner, perhaps the probs that i have been referring to are caused by such atittudes. civil servants are just that and perhaps it would be as well if now and again they are reminded of that.
it would be interesting to see also what the rules are about mentioning (using imho) job descriptions in postings on public accessed forums,
tell me why do you put your job title etc on something that has nothing to do with work. is it so that we should be impressed? or is it something a little more sinister?

Re: Huge difference?

Strewth Stu!

I think it's great that Mike is interested enough and cares enough to post here. The fact that he is posting in an official capacity (hence identifying who he is) carries some weight when he explains a regulation or an official position, rather than an anonymous posting of 'I know what I'm talking about so you'll have to trust me on this' which would just spark off a number of idiots who think they know better.

We should be encouraging Mike, not knocking him, and I just wish others like the RYA, RNLI etc would post here officially and put across their views

Hear hear on that.

I think it's called being cusomer-centric in MBA-speak. Generally reckoned to be a Good Thing. Just think, if we ever don't get a MMSI directory (daft idea, that is) it might just be because Mike tuned in here.

Re: Huge difference?

They (generally speaking) get paid more than us for what is a smaller remit and tend to be better regarded, I've been tempted to move into Local Govt myself. So please don't mis-read the sentiments in my posts.

As to posting with my job title, it helps people to realise where I am coming from with my responses. Unfortunately, (probably for me) I can't quite deal with the usual "faceless" image, in that I am a naturally pro-active people person (so shoot me), in fact I chose this particular job as I have a personal interest rather than trying to advance my CS career (some chance). As to it being nothing to do with work I think you should scan through my postings on here and see just how important it is to helping my customers understand what my little bit of the agency actually does.

AND,

It is also worth mentioning that I have managed to sort out quite a few customer problems through this less formal medium, as people do seem to feel more relaxed about PMing me rather than writing letters to me at the Agency.

but what if i signed off as mayor

or town councillor?
I could have used the same arguments that you have put forward.
there is a time and place to put your job title forward and in my opinion this is not the place for it and i am sure that if the "Aeronautical & Maritime Services Section, Radiocommunications Agency" felt that a forum was necessary to "sort out quite a few customer problems through this less formal medium" they would provide such a vehicule. I also think that the "Aeronautical & Maritime Services Section, Radiocommunications Agency" would be unhappy to see advice being given, on a non official website by one of their employees. Liability insurance starts to raise its head methinks.

Re: but what if i signed off as mayor

I am beginning to think that you are picking on me, which seems (IMHO) a little bit counter-active.

Bearing in mind that the majority of Forumites have never (to my knowledge) had a problem with my job-title being shown, could you please explain exactly why you feel that there is something wrong with it. In fact you could actually start a new thread as it is taking this one way off topic.

Quite the opposite- I think most of us are glad we know who and what you are. Means we know that (hopefully!) you know what you're talking about. And it's not like you're advertising anything, or trying to sell us anything, given licences are compulsory.

It would be useful if more people did the same, and filled out their user id's a bit more. Not just sailing details, but often job and background can help as well. We've got lots of ex merchant marine, boat builders, engineers and the like on this forumn, and knowing their background often helps in understanding where they're coming from when they're answering certain types of post.
