Hi,
I have wooden toe rails, washboards and coamings which were treated with Sikens wood treatment when new. Time and weather has taken a toll, but with the weather being what it is I am reluctant to get the sander out only to get the bare wood soaked ! I am assuming that the wood needs to be dry, is this the case ? I need to get something on before winter (sic) sets in.

Any thoughts or experience any-one ?

Following the aquisition of Dulux by Akzo-Nobel, Sikkens products in the U.K. are now marketed by Dulux at their trade centres. I suggest that you look up your local Dulux centre and contact them for advice

I think you should hang fire on the bare wood approach. I bought Sikkens Cetol Marine varnish, partly because it was easy to maintain through 'topping up', rather than having to start all over again every time. (Was very pleased with the early results but now have sold the boat I had used it on.)

I have in front of me a tin of Sikkens Cetol Marine varnish which says "Maintenance of existing Cetol Marine finish: degrease with a detergent cleaner and clean with fresh water. Sand wood surface matt with P220/P330-grit sandpaper. After removing dirt and degreasing, apply 2 further coats." It doesn't mention ensuring surfaces are dry, either for maintenance or applying first coats to bare wood. Whether this applies to any other Sikkens products i wouldn't know.

Read my previous post on Cetol. I had problems with bubbles which, it was suggested by Sikkens, were moisture or resin leaching out of the wood through the "varnish" before it had set. It is permeable to the extent that, now the finish has dried, I have found bubbles (of moisture?) on the surface.

Dry it! Sikkens suggest a heat gun!
