A good friend of mine is currently visiting family in Sidney Australia and will be there for about four weeks. Is there a friendly forumite out there with a boat who could show her the sights of Sidney Harbour from the water.?

Ted

Ted, if nobody volunteers, don't despair - there is an excellent system of ferries of all types and sizes pottering around and about the harbour. I spent a week there 11 years ago, and got a 1 week pass for the ferries which was excellent value.

Although I will freely admit that it would be much nicer for sure to be out on a lovely sailing boat instead!

I walked across the bridge on a summer Saturday and was amazed to see no more than a dozen sails on the whole harbour yet Aussies kept telling me how crowded the water was. The same applies at Melbourne.

The ferries are super and frequent to all places around. We used them on several occasions on our visit last year combining with walks, and even a bus back to Sydney. Made for super days out, also being on the water as part of it.

Flew over Sydney harbour on Tuesday of last week on our way east, there are still a couple of classic old timber tall ships that do day trips around the harbour.

After spending an hour and a half on the tarmac waiting for take off clearance.

Here is one. A replica of the Endeavour IIRC

Not exactly crowded...

DooooooooooH, what a d**k head I am, apologies to all SYDNEYIANS.
Thanks for all the replies, I'm sure she will have sussed all the ferries etc but a trip on a small sailboat would have been so much nicer.

Thanks, Ted.

The ferries are excellent - do them anyway.

But if you want to get afloat and see it all independently, there are boat hire places near to hand. The one I used 3 years ago is right next to the harbour bridge opposite the opera house - it hires out privately owned sailing yachts for a reasonable daily rate. I suggest a hit on the web to sort out what's actually on offer now. We had a fantastic day!

I've been going to Sydney every summer now for the last seven years. I did my Competent Crew with Eastsail at Rushcutters Bay and they also hire yachts for a day, half a day etc. They are really good and friendly They are at http://www.eastsail.com.au/

I have also gone out with Sydney By Sail at Darling Harbour, http://www.sydneybysail.net/ and they were good too. However if you want an unforgettable day out then go out on the James Craig, a three masted square rigger. http://www.shf.org.au/JCraig/JCraig.html They take you out of the harbour and sail out past Manly. you need to do their two day course before they allow you up in the rigging, but even without that, it's a great day out.
