My weekend in brilliant sunshine was somewhat marred by a poorly outboard.

I think its a fuel problem but I would welcome ideas from the panel please.

Suzuki 100. Carb model - oil injection. 4 cyl.

Engine only 18 months old and correctly serviced. From cold motor starts - no problem. 1500 rpm down the estuary for a 2/3 of a mile or so, the engine will have warmed up - again, no probs. All systems normal on instruments. Open it up on to the plane and steady out at 4000rpm - no probs. After anothewr 1/2 mile the motor gradually loses power and comes down off all 4 cyls, to 3, then 2, then 1 and then cuts out. I can restart it but it doesnt recover and I have to limp back to port. Leave it for a few hours / a day, and it does exactly the same again.

It sounds like some form of fuel starvation - the motor was winterised but this is the first time out.

Hmm seems like fuel. When it splutters, see if the rubber fuel bulb in the fuel line is imploding. If it is, the engine fuel pump is fine and the blockage is upstream at the tank end. If the bulb stays solid (full of fuel) then the problem could be fuel pump at the engine end. They are easy to fix, they are usually diaphragm pumps operated by crankcase pulsating pressure, though I'm not familiar with that particular model.

could be something simple like vent on fuel tank or the bulb is faulty ,have had something similar and it turned out to be the bulb try this first it's cheap quick and easy to replace

also check the gause filter in/on the tank outlet pipe,or filter if it has one, and clean fuel/tanks.

Agree all the above though I assume you have checked the basics like filters etc.

But I just noticed you sed 18mths old. If it's that young it will be under full warranty still, so take back to dealer and tellem to sortitout!

Unless it's a grey import or used commercially, in which case warranty has expired I suppose? Or you have hydraulicked it in which case they will deny warranty.....!

I'd love to but.....the only Suzi dealership that was anything like near me was closed down.....by Suzuki!

If it is crap in fuel, or crappy fuel feeds, it isn't warrenty work anyway. If it is serious, then the responsible qualified mechanic that I will appoint to investigate, will tell me so, and then I will tow the boat the 100 or so miles to get it fixed under warrenty.

BTW I did replace the fuel line and bulb. The filter on the engine is clean. I can pump fuel from the tank through the filter and I have disconnected the line to the fuel pump to prove this. The bulb doesnt collapse when the starvation occurs.

I'm thinking pump (less likely) or carbs.

Take the bowls off the carbs and see what is in there check the floats arent sticking etc etc.

Seems funny that the problem occurs after you have been on the plane for a bit. In other words if there was something loose in the tank it would move to the back of the boat and could block the fuel feed. Does it do this if you have not been going faster say if you pottered at 8 knots for ages wil it still happen. Other than that the only thing I can think of is electrics or overheating. Faulty Ignition unit which overheats or sensors shut down the engine due to overheating?

I know I am looking at the ridiculous but these days it never seems to be obvious answers.

Check the fuel system (as others have said).....otherwise could be ignition box breaking down when hot (I've had a fair few do this, on motorcycles and outboards).

The "light up" spark testers or caps can be dead handy for this sort of problem......or an inductive timing light is useful too, tho these don't always work at higher speeds on some CDI ignition units.
