I\'d agree with Scarlett
about the Bay of Naples being the most undesirable/expensive/overcrowded/filthy place in all the Med. I found out the hard way, spending a miserable 2 weeks there awaiting wife's arrival by air.
Salerno is safe, cheap and easy public transport into all the Naples sights. (Use the quay behind the main harbour, the marina is always full).
Of the islands, Ventotene outer is quite good, the ferry comes in daily, during the season and, as a result, mooring space is very limited - if you're slim and under 10m the old galley harbour is a possibility. The others are crowded out in season.
Mind you we're quite a way from Sicily and even further from Tunisia.
