showing the right/wrong/no flag

you sew it and I will fly it

it would make a great film for KTL - breing dragged through the courts of herladry - if such a thinh exists

That'll be the _College Of Arms_ dubbing you in to the _Court Of Chivalry_.

Those guys have more letters *after* their names than I have *in* mine, so I wouldn't mess with them.

(NOTB, it is, of course _Lord Lyon_ and his band of merry men that hold sway over matters both civil *and* criminal )

righto - now you are really tempting me

In that case I am going to buy one

and start flying it

sounds like a cracking good idea

and after that I shall attempt to get done for pedalling furiously on my three speed sturmey archer

As most Counties now appear to have awarded themselves a flag why don't you add each one to your hoist as you pass or visit, in a year or so the slug could look quite gay :)

Hate to disagree, but stealing another (wo)man's colours and flying false flag is a bit infra dig, unless you're claiming ruse de guerre (ed: that's enough latin).

I mean, I /could/ style myself "Dyelon Summer of the slog (all lower case)" and start a series of "Keep Turning Right" videos, but they wouldn't be as good as yours.

Whether or not you or I agree with it, we should accord the same curtesy to Royal Standard as we do to the flags on the Cenotaph.

You are, of course - in this country - free to burn any flag you want.

good point

I am not that bothered about insulting the Royal Family - not that they will ever know or care

I am more bothered about upsetting the war dead and their relatives though

especially since many of them fought for my right to burn and abuse flags

probably not going to put a flag on the slug

don't want the windage and I need the flag hole for the tripod

http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/scuttlebutt/scuttlebutt-66-troublesome-reach/

as my perceptive wife warned me - by saying what I think - I run the risk of alienating groups of people one by one until no-one will watch any of the films

so from here on KTL films will be just stills of english rivers accompanied by tracks from Elgar - no voice overs - no opinions

How upset would you be if I decided to fly the union flag from the stern of the slug?

Actually, while not generally being a bunting-tossing pedant, I think that would annoy me. Connotations of Birmingham Navy I suspect.

some of my stainless steel is less than shiny - what is the best thing to clean it with and why should I bother?

You shouldn't bother. Mine was supplied un-shiny from new.

Dylan - you have to have seen the number of times this daft question has come up and generated more heat than light! I never had you down as an ordure stirrer. :)

Really? Stirring threads on here is what Dylan does when he's not stirring mud in some backwater :)

Flag virgin winter here.

Has anyone ever got into trouble for showing the wrong flag or no flag at all?

I don't generally fly an ensign because as a man who has raced more years than he has cruised I don't want the extra windage and it keeps on getting in the way of the camera (same reason I don't have dodgers). I also use the flag holder as a base for the tripod.

But what happens if you go to another country, say France, Ireland or Scotland (soon) and don't show a courtesy flag.

Does a man in a powerful skiff come up and tell you off or fine you.

Has anyone on this forum been fined or told off.

Do they police these things in Cherbourg or Ramsgate.

I think we should be told or is all this flag stuff a bucket on nonsense

I am dying to know.... and also fancy starting a stupidly long thread where I can engage with my fellow pedants

Dylan

I've no idea how many times I've raced to France over the last 30 years. We (obviously) never fly a flag crossing certainly never put a flag up on arrival and it's never been a problem.

I'd be interested to read any British or European Laws specifying fines for failure to fly a flag.

(I've got some recollection of a fine for showing an incorrect flag, but I'd be amazed if any vessel would ever get fined for this in a European Country.)

so, it still stands then - no-one has yet given proof or even first hand experience, rather than heresay, of anyone being fined

apparently a stroppy local official might come and wag a finger at you.....

so that is another major expense spared

this thread is going so well.... what with Royal Ensigns, code flags etc etc and some wonderfully witty comments

so much better than the one over on PBO - which started out as an innocent enquiry about an aeroplane and suddenly I am a bad person it seems

getting a bit of pasting over there chaps

Defaced Ensign

CA Members have the rare privilege of being allowed to fly a defaced Blue Ensign. In order to fly this special flag you must obtain a permit from the Secretariat.

But Dylan...

You are- we established already that with the KTL Exposure Thread.
It's just that over here we accept that Forums may contain nuts( to nick another chaps signature) and meglomanics bent on world domination, but so long as they keep to Forum rules, we don't mind....:D

Dylan,
If you want an ensign but need to keep maintenance to a minimum look no further than the Dutch flag. It is cunningly designed so that as the end frays you simple cut off an inch or so and the design is in no way compromised. I've always admired those frugal Dutch.
I was once 'fined' ,effectively anyway, for not having a courtesy flag; in Luperon, Dominican Republic, I checked in with no courtesy flag to replace my quarantine flag - long faces all around from the three officials crowded into our saloon. By a stroke of good fortune the officials were able to sell me one for $10.00. It looked like something El Commandante's mother had knocked up in her spare time.

Why not fly a blue un-defaced ensign! It certainly attracts some strange looks!
On my 1972 Hustler 25.5, I incurred all manner of "snotty" brigade looks, from the lofty heights of their shiny plastic fantastics! Some of them even use dodgy "commodore" titles, which seems to put their noses out even more!! There is some kind of relationship between self importance and indignation! I haven't quite figured it out yet!

Well I fly an undefaced blue ensign on my far from immaculate, 1967-built, 28-foot boat and nobody seems to take the slightest notice. (Which suits me just fine.)

Maybe there is some other reason for the strange looks you are getting? :D

Maybe this is why they are called courtesy flags and not compulsory flags.

very good point - it is nice for some of the locals to see the duster flying from a foreigners yard arm

although I could not give a tinkers if the dutch or french decide to fly one or not

rather sad that they can fly the union flag and I can't

or shouldn't
