at the mid point the wire passes through an eye on the back of the gaff

Sounds odd - my guess is it's either
1 a mistake (most probable, IMHO)
2 you need another strop to go between the 2 parts formed, with the block running along that
3 when you reef you move the peak block from one side of the mid-way eye to the other (but then why's it on the back? Or, when you say "back" do you mean "top" - ie opposite side to sail?)

when I said the back.... I obviously meant the top
