Should we have a Thank You button too?

Excellent suggestion.:) There is such a button on a gas engineers forum that I use and it is very much appreciated.

Best send a note to the Mods to see if they can provide.

Not really sure to be honest Sabre, although I know the Volvo Forum very well and use it frequently. Having said that, it is nice to get a thank-you every now and again if you've helped someone out. I've had quite a few PM's from people saying just that, and I must admit it does give you a nice warm glow and give you incentive to help some more...

Mind you, I do have difficulty dealing with the PM's calling me a pr*t... ha ha...;)

The logic doesn't add up though. If someone can't be bothered posting with a simple thank you, they are not likely to be bothered to click on a "thank you button".

Personally smileys / emoticons should be used very sparingly. Over at "Cruisers & Sailing Forums" they have a huge range of smileys / emoticons to choose from, as one would expect from a forum based on American Culture; some posts are just unreadable. They also ban text speak in their posts, no sense of perspective either.

So I say no to a thank you smiley. Its not needed and would only lead to further debasement. Now about flag etiquette, when dressed overall, should one still hoist the burgee .........

Not sure what you think it has to do with smileys. It just puts a note under the post saying something like "The following users say thankyou for this useful post: Bob, Fred, Helen".

Personally I'm neither for nor agin it.

At the bottom of the posts from the link in the OP are smilies associated with saying thank you. Whether they are part of an automatic thank you button or not, I don't know, nor do I care, but it is why I think it has to do with smilies. Happy now with my explanation?

Thank you is polite but hardly necessary, most of us enjoy the opportunity to flaunt our knowledge or lack of it; I would be much more pleased if the questioner were to take the trouble to come back with feedback on how he used the info. offered and the outcome, that would be a real demonstration of gratitude.

I agree; there's often no feedback, although some people do send thanks by PM.

Ah - you mean the post at 1643 with the animated yellow bowing-down thingy?

That's not what's being proposed (and I agree it looks naff).

If you look at post number 5, you will see it has a box underneath saying that a particular user said thanks. Other people's names might be added to the same box if they said thanks too. There's a button on each post (presumably you only see it if logged in, which is why we can't see them on that Volvo thread) which you would use to do this if you think the post is useful.

The ugly bowing-down thingy would have been added completely separately from pressing the "Thanks" button.

A 'Thankyou' button and a 'Like' button (a la Facebook) would allow people to show gratitude or approval without cluttering up the threads. (I think the +1 posts show that people want a non-wordy way to show approval.)

How about something like this? (before you make scurrilous comments about the model in the picture. It was my mother)

Personally, I find all responses helpful.

If you find one response particularly helpful, and say so, there is always the possibility that you will offend the other people who have responded.

I go along with others who would be more interested in quality feedback.

Although there is again the possibility that you may offend others if what they have suggested turns out to be duff.

Now i'm even more confused what to do.
